Is this True?? about ECU's and performance?

Lately I been doing a lot of research on ECUs
and programming.. and I just want to see if someone
can shed some light on this..

So are all the ECU's that are reprogrammed
are basically the same, when it goes to
fuel and boost curves.. And is the only major
difference between diff ECU's is the TIMING??

Is timing the big secret from different Reprogrammers?
ECU"s..

I hear that the TIMING is the most critical thing in performance when it comes to ECU's and all the repgrammers keep them a secret. Is this true???

Since I don't have a dyno readily available to me..
Would it be wise for me to get a programmable unit
like a PFC? Are the PFC base maps any good??
OR a reprogrammed ECU like Pettite?

THanks

All depends on what you want to do with the car. If you want to go far in performance mods then I would highly recommend the pfc, haltech, or another programmable ecu. If you are just going to do a light duty (ie. intake, dp, cb, pulleys, ic) then I would go with pettit's or m2's ecu.
I am pretty sure that the base maps for the pfc is good for intake, dp, cb, and ic. Don't quote me on that but like I said, I am pretty sure.

I heard pettit just dumps more fuel into the engine and the timming isnt really adjusted. Is this true?

Really, ECUs are designed to control fuel for what you have installed in the car, they don't make a car faster than the sum of its parts, turbo, boost, port etc.. Some may control more things like timing so potentially they can make a small difference in making the car more efficient, dumping excess fuel in only makes for a rich mix and less chance for detonation but the highest HP is going to come from the ECU that tightly controls mix, detonation sensing etc. also the speed of the ECU 8bit vs 16 or 32 makes for better control hence higher efficiency and I guess a little higher HP. IMHO

Well, there are a few things to consider.

1) Some ECUs are 8 bit and some are 16 bit. The PFC and other like it are 16 bit, and I think that the M2 and Pettit ones are 8 bit.

2) No timing isn't the only difference. Different pre-programmed ECUs have many different qualities. What they are for each ECU, I dunno, but teh amount of fuel delivered, and other attributes are not the same among them.

3) The PFC, and others like it seem to clear up the 3K hesitation much better then preprogrammed units like M2 and pettit.

4) The PFC is plug and play, the Haltech requires installation of new sensors and/or running your own wires to existing sensors.

I'm sure there are more differences, that other more knowledgeable people can point out.

I think that the reprogrammed ECU's are basically the same. What they all seem to do is remove the fuel cut and add a lot of fuel. In regards to timing, I'm sure most places just leave it alone. Engines will vary on how much you can advance the timing, and in the interest of safety, I'm sure they just leave it alone.

Dave

I already tried 2 pms's..
3 if you count my gf's haha

They don't cut my fuel cut...

I think I am gonna go with a PFC

Go with the PFC....I just installed mine tonight and it's the best mod I've done since my intercooler...

I had an M2 Stage 3 ECU and I sold it to get this PowerFC and I had it tuned...and damn, I can feel a huge difference...
