Trouble Starting new Rebuild
Ok here it is folks...
I just installed a rebuilt 13b in my FD. Here are the details:
Stock Rebuild
Stock Turbos (Non-Sequential)
Downpipe
Hi-Flow Cat
No emissions/No airpump
This car was running with a bad oil leak when I bought it. I got the engine rebuilt and put everything back together (minus emissions).
1 Try: When I first tried to start it, she started right up and ran high idle for 10sec. Then what looked like a ploom of exhaust smoke came out from under the hood, and the car died.
2 Try: So I got under the car and dad started her up. I watched smoke come out from somewhere around the lowere intake manifold/turbos. Up/down/left/right. It was coming from all over. Then the car dies after 5sec.
3 Try: No more exhaust coming from the engine bay. All exhaust apears to be going out the tailpipe. BUT THE CAR WONT START ANYMORE!!!!
We tried a couple times. The starter engages, and she tries to turn over, but she doesn't.
If anymone has any ideas, or troubleshooting tips, I'm all ears..
Thanks.

if its a new motor the seals may not be set. add 2oz of oil(thicker the better)into each spark plug hole, reinstall plugs and try to start it. this will increase compression enough to start it. if it starts run at 1500 rpm or higher for a minute or two.
good luck
good luck

Correction/update
OK
The car is in fact turning over. It sounds like its catching and almost starting. IT JUST WON'T START.
It sounds like a V8 that is badly out of time. I don't know any other way to describe it.
ALSO, white smoke is continuing to come out of the tailpipe, so that would lead me to believe the gas is igniting.
I look forward to hearing some ideas..
Thanks.

Hi there im 90% sure its just flooded can happen on a new rebuild. Just remove the plugs and dry them, remove the EGI fuse and crank out all the unburnt fuel, replace plugs and i bet she fires right up.

Ok guys thanks. I'm going to remove the plugs, crank it over a couple times, re-install the plugs, and see if she starts.
I'll keep ya posted. Thanks Again....

You're going to see TERRIBLE white smoke out of a rebuild. That's assembly lube burning off. You'll also likely see faint smoke in the engine bay as you'll touch exhaust components with greasy hands. This will burn off after 10 minutes or so. Try installing new plugs first before you add any oil. Depending on many things your motor might not have good compression yet. Once you get it started rev it to whatever it needs to maintain an "idle." Keep an eye on all the gauges and look for any external leaks. Many people don't do a good job of burping the system so watch that coolant gauge...

Ok,
I pulled the plugs, cleaned them in gas, turned the engine over a couple times, and re-installed the plugs. NO LUCK....
Any other ideas out there??
I just don't understand. She keeps turning over like she's about to start, but never does...

it sounds flooded, but u gotta check for spark aswell.
do a search how to check for spark and the proper way to unflood the engine. Cranking the car over a couple times with the egi fuse out is often not enough. dry the plugs out real good with some compressed air if u can. add some oil to the housings aswell to help with compression. of course none of this will help if u are not getting a good spark from your coils.

She started up on the third try after following the steps to start a flooded engine.
Thanks Guys for the help...
A couple of you said that it was normal for a new engine to smoke for a while when you first run it. I had mine running for about 5 min before I shut it off, and she was still spilling out white smoke.
How long should this continue? I checked the oil and it doesn't appear that there is any coolant in the oil, so thats good. Is there anything I should be worried about?
Thanks Again,
Trent

I let the engine run for a good 20 minutes on my first start up. It blew a decent amount of smoke for the first five to ten minutes.
You should be able to smell what it is burning to some degree - does the white smoke smell sweet at all? If not, your good to go - it is just the lube used in the building process.

good work man,
you can run it for aslong as u want now, i would bring it up to operating temp. Make sure u are checking for external leaks and that your fans kick in when it reaches operating temp. Make sure to check coolant levels often to ensure the system is topped up.
