Trouble shooting coolant issue... please help

Hey guys... tried searching... thought it would be best if i got direct answers from experienced members on the board.... heres the situation..

Without starting the engine.. just turing the ignition to power on.... after about 10seconds the "add coolant" buzzer will begin.. I have investigated components... what i found was ....

1. I have a leak in my coolant overflow tank....

2. The rad filler cap is in terrible condition.. the rubber seal on the inside of the cap is all worn and missing in most spots.

Could these issues be the result of my "add coolant" light/buzzer appearing???

also to note... if i top up the coolant and drive.. as long as im driving continuously, the "coolant buzzer" will not appear.... but the moment i stop for a short/long period of time... then the buzzer comes on... My assumtion is that the coolant is expanding and going into the overflow tank, and leaking out and not returning when needed.. is this a good assumption???

sorry for the lengthy post... i'd appreciate any help i can get..

thanks guys..

Yes, that's a good assumption. Replace both the AST cap and radiator (filler neck) cap. Mazda OEM is better than a parts-store brand.

The overflow tank will leak at the seam where the neck meets the tank if you overfill it and look like a coolant leak.

can bad rad caps, combined with air in the system cause the coolant buzzer to go off???

It can prevent the coolant that gets pushed into the overflow tank from getting sucked back into the system. This shift of volume happens every time the system goes from cold to hot to cold.

Is the AST cap supposed to feel like there is a spring or some mechanisim that is holding it inside??? Does it take force to remove the cap?? The rad cap simply turns and comes off... this isnt the case with the ast cap.....

thanks for the help guys....

also after further investigating the overflow tank... it looks as if there is some sort of "tape" or something of that sort that was near the top of the bottle.. is this normal? Im assuming it was a quick patch up job someone attempted to stop the bottle from leaking....

the tape is normal

should be between the tank and the neck that comes up.

check the thin coolant hose running from ast to filler tank if u haven't. mine wasnt leaking coolant, but it wasn't allowing coolant to be sucked back into the system because the hose was allowing air to be sucked in instead. clamp the hose at its joints and see ifthat fixes your problem. it fixed mine.

and replace those caps. if u need some i have a ast and radiator cap for sale
