transmission rebuild questions

I have a few questions about a rebuild on my 5 speed FD. My car will be in for a 5th gear syncro and a dyno tune next week and I'd like to know if there is anything else I should have replaced while the transmission is out and torn down that far aside from just the syncro itself. I originally thought replacing all syncros would be a good idea but was told that it's a good bit deeper in and will hike up the cost considerably to do them all. I was quoted $450.00 for the 5th gear syncro replacement. The car is a '94 with 56k on the clock, and everything else seems to be perfect except for the grind into 5th if I don't baby it in. It's got an ACT 6 puck clutch that the previous owner put in, so I don't believe I'll need to do a clutch replacement.

Thanks for any info provided.

while you have it out it'd be benefitical to have the clutch replaced and the flywheel resurfaced. But that's me, I like to do everything at once when I have trannys out for work. Also have them inspect your shift forks for wear.

If it doesn't make noise and shifts fine, I'd leave it at the 5th gear syncro. No need to fork over an extra grand if there is no need. Ask your mechanic to keep his eyes open, examine everything and toss in some nice synthetic fluid.

As far as the tranny goes, just do the 5th gear syncro. It's not like "while you have it apart do this and that". It's a major job to do more in the case & it will cost you a bunch even if nothing else is really wrong.

I would get a new spindle though. Yields more positive shifts with a better chance of hitting 3rd instead of 5th.

I did a full rebuild - shift collars, syncros, input shaft, all new bearings and seals. Shifts wonderfully but cost too damn much with Mazda prices & it took a lot of time, even with some tranmission instructors at a community college helping me when I got stuck. It is a very precise piece of equipment and unless your shop has done them before, it's a a far tougher tranny to do than average.

I think new trannys go for $2,200 so before I went through that again, I think I would just buy one. It's just not cost effective to do a full rebuild unless you have nothing but time.

Just to give you an idea, I did not do a total rebuild on my tranny until 135,000+ miles. By then the second gear synchro was not working well enough to prevent grinding on shifts. With 56K on your tranny and assuming proper maintenance and you have average shifting skills, you should have a good run yet on the transmission before a total rebuild is necessary. Going beyond the 5th/reverse synchros gets a good bit more involved and is probably overkill at your present mileage. Even at 135,000 most of the rest of the tranny was in functional shape. All the bearings were still working properly and all of the synchros beside 2nd gear functioned well. Obviously with it apart for the 2nd gear synchro it just made sense to replace the wear parts. Mazda builds a pretty good tranny for this car.

tcb100--com'on you big weeney it wasn't that hard. (Just giving you a hard time!)
