AST exploded...need insight for daily driver fast please anyone??

This is kinda a double post, but I'm desperate as my rx is my daily and only driver, and I have quite a commute resuming tommorrow,

So, friday night headin to my friends house for poker -night, my ast springs multiple leaks, its late, and I'm 60 miles from home, so, I rout the hose that normally goes from the ast to the overflow directly to the filler neck, and drive home, seemingly no problems until I park it in my driveway, and I hear horrible spitting noises, (presumably the hot water shooting directly into my overflow.

so last night I order a petite AST from the Rx7 store, but I know it wont be here for several days...

Is it going to be safe to run like this until it arrives? Its my only running car, and I commute 25 miles each way to work, often in stop and go traffic,,,

comments Anyone please? I'm kinda in a bind....

the same thing happined to me. i know it sucks, but the best thing to do is to just be patient and wait for the new ast. remember one good over heat usually leads to a rebuild......

good luck!

Here's an idea. There should be a handful of local FD owners in your with their stock AST tank laying around. Post a WTB in your regional section and see if you can ****** one up for like $20 and roll that until your Petit AST comes in if you haven't done that already.

You could do what I did, and do a half-assed AST elimination until your Pettit comes in.

When my AST exploded a few years ago, I had to make a scheduled trip about 120 miles away early the following morning. Since canceling it or waiting for parts was not an option, I used several small "c" clamps (around the seam) and some silicoln or epoxy to hold the thing together temporarily until I could fab a replacement. The temp fix worked, and I eventually replaced the AST at my convenience. Also check to see that you are using the lower pressure 13#/.9bar radiator cap to help reduce stress. Good luck.

FDs are not daily drivers, you will hate your life if you drive it every day. I drove mine for 2 weeks strait and I couldn't stand it, but thats just me. There are alot of decent cars out there for $3,000 you could drive daily. You'll have to get something once your motor blows anyway.

I drive mine every day in the non-winter months. I love it. Yes, it's just you.

No it's not safe to run it that way, when you routed the hose that way I'll bet you didn't change the caps and were running with zero pressure, not to mention even if you had swapped the caps there would have been no way for the coolant to move into the recoverey tank or draw back into the system when cooling, you be very lucky if you idn't over heat the motor.

Call enterprise rental car or any of the other rental agencies and get a car to handle the commute until the AST comes in.

All you need to do is put the presurized cap from your AST (or get a new one) on the filler neck until the AST arrives.

The cap on the filler neck isn't a pressure cap because the AST carries it, and that's basically all an "AST elimination kit" is... a pressure cap.

This isn't a true statement as the hose that goes from the fill neck to the recovery tank has to be plumbed between the top seal and the pressure seal. Basically you would need the AST elimination net to put on your thermostat housing.
