Angry Transmission headaches

currently I am in the process of putting my engine back in and I am having just a bitch of a time getting the engine to line up with the auto tranny. When I pulled the motor out I decided to disconnect the tranny from the engine when it was still in the engine bay thinking it would be easier and now I cant get the two of them to meet back up. any info would be great.

Have you tried rotating the main pulley of the engine to get the motor and transmission to line up? Are you using a load leveler? I made the mistake a couple months back of not using one and it made the process much more difficult.

Iam not to the point of actually lining up the bolts on the torque converter with the holes on the flex plate yet (that is if thats what your talking about). Iam just trying to actually get the flexplate inside the bellhousing and get it to the point where I can bolt the bellhousing the the motor. BTW what is a load leveler??

well.... hmmm do you have the transmission jacked up from the under side allowing it to angle up a bit to make it easier to get everything to line up? Where does it seem you are getting hung up? Sorry for the simple questions I'm trying to understand your situation a bit more clearly.

I have been jacking the transmission up and down ill try to leave it up. actually right now it seems that the tranny needs to be shifted to the left. Also should I not have the bolts on the motor mounts through the holes when I do this??

Wait are your mounts bolted to your motor already? I was told the mounts should be left off and placed into the subframe, drop the motor in and then bolt them up when it's in place.

Yes they are bolted on to the motor. Damn thats a preety good idea. So your saying remove the motor mounts put them in the spots in the subframe where they are supposed to go and put the motor in mounting it the the transmission and then bolt the mounts on?? btw when the motor is in is it easy to bolt the mounts back up?

I had no problem doing this. It made the job alot easier because you don't have the mounts acting like hooks and getting caught on things. Not to mention you've got the bolts to deal with that can get hung up. Put them in place in the sub frame and then leave them loose maybe just put the bottom nut on a couple of turns so they don't come out. Try that, may save you a lot of headache.

This technique works. I did it after running into the same problems that started this thread. Just make SURE you clear any silicone sealant you have on the motor mount to engine bolts, and try and clear as much out of the oil pan area as well to avoid splitting the block with pressure as you screw the bolts BACK in all covered in goo. And DO use sealant here.. they'll leak otherwise. Hell, sometimes they leak even WITH the sealant. Ask me how I know...
