VA trans control housing fluid level

when I pulled my tranny I noticed the control housing fluid level was almost full to the top .
1st Would this cause any adverse affects to it?
2nd Having some trouble removing all the fluid is there a visual level I can use?

There is an oil seal that keeps the cavity around the shifter separate from the rest of the transmission. I'm not sure if this cavity is supposed to be packed with grease or filled with gear oil (the FSM is actually unclear about this) but in any case it does not indicate the oil level of the overall transmission.

Check the gear oil level at the proper fill plug on the side of the transmission case with the car level. That will give you an accurate idea of fill level.

The FSM is very unclear about it . But it does show both grease on the shifter end and a small amout of gear lube in it also . I do understand the main housing level. My problem came about when I pulled the tranny to change the cluth I had a leak from the control housing blind cover and I laid the tranny on it's side not realizing there is two seperate levels.

I read a couple of treads where the person filled it to the top of the shifter seat in that housing . I think that would negate the use of grease on the end of the shifter . There is also no spinning parts in there , sense there is no vent I don't think I need worry about pressure build up.

If you take the time to search you will discover it's been discussed before. I don't remember there being a more defined answer.

Whether you choose grease or oil, it will be lubricated. The only wrong answer is nothing.
