Tranny Rebuild

My tranny seems to be going out, making noise when clutch is engaged. Just wondering whats parts should I order before the rebuild? I'm already ordering the throwout bearing, pilot bearing, 5th gear synchro... Does the tranny need a whole rebuild just for the parts mentioned?

What else should I replace?

Thanks,
Joseph

No they can even do the 5ht gear without pulling tranny. But the thng with trannys is sometimes you need to open it up, and see what is really broken or worn. Shop around unless you know trannys those guys can be ruthless with prices.

Are you sure it's a transmission problem? Just from what you've said, I would first suspect the clutch. If it just grinds going from 4th to 5th, then it's probably the 5th gear synchro but that doesn't automatically mean a total rebuild.

The problem I have is the noise in neutral,1st and 2nd when the clutch is engaged. When the clutch is in, the noise stops. From other threads this sounds like a bad throwout bearing or input shaft. I also want to replace the 5th gear synchro while I'm in there you know. Does replacing the throwout, pilot or input shaft need a total rebuild???

Throw-out bearing: NO. Totally seperate from the transmission and easy to change. Just slips on to the clutch fork.

Pilot bearing: NO, it's also seperate from the tranny but it's a little harder to change. Requires removal of the flywheel and a special tool to remove the bearing. The flywheel is held on with a single 52 mm nut and is generally on there pretty tight. Here in the states you can rent the tool from some of the vendors that sell the clutches etc. or possibly from your local parts store. If you go to the trouble of removing the FW, have it re-surfaced.

Input shaft: Not sure but it will require tearing down your transmission to some extent. I'm at work and don't have access to my Factory Service Manual, which is something you should get if you don't have it already. You can download it for free here:

From your description, noise goes away by depressing clutch pedal, your problem is input shaft bearing which is inside transmission and requires total disassembly. The tools required exceed $600 alone. Take it to KD Rotary or another qualified rotary shop. Good luck.

"Input shaft bearing" I assume you're talking about the main drive gear bearing, Item 2, FSM J-20?
