tranny problems!!!

My brother took the car to the track and last night and when i took it to work i couldn't get it out of 5th gear. I told him to take it easy on the car and i guess he didnt. When i went to the shop acouple weeks ago they told me my syncros were bad and now the whole the is f**ked up. I can move the shifter and everything but its not popping out of gear. DOES ANYONE KNOW EXACTLY WHAT THE PROBLEM IS?

Your 5th gear synchro broke, and is preventing the tranny from shifting properly. The same thing happened to me once. I jiggled and tugged on the shifter and was able to get it out of gear. Replacing the fifth gear synchro is much cheaper than a full tranny rebuild.

seriously though: replacing the fifth gear syncro involves actually dropping the trans and opening it up. The syncro only costs a few dollars labor is what gets you with this one. If you have a shop do it expect it to cost at least $500.

Assuming your shops earlier diagnosis is correct, then it only makes sense to get a complete rebuild or buy a new/rebuilt tranny. If the thing is going to be torn down to do the 5th gear synchro and the others are on the verge, then just push on into the gear case and get it done right.

(And, yes, I know that the 5th gear synchro is a cinch compared to going into the case. I rebuilt one of these baby's about 3-4 years ago.)

^^PM Dave Geesman--"dgeesman" on here. He is probably more in tune with current prices on items. He may just refer you to Malloy. Each tranny rebuild differs, however, because some components will be fine in one tranny but need replacing in another. You are probably going to want to replace the main shaft bearings (3 in #), the synchros for 1st, 2nd and 3rd gear (some of these are two piece items) and the shifter bushing. If the rubber boot around the shifter has never been replaced, then you will want to do that also.

The whole berring kit with all syncor's and everything is 570$ from Ray at Molley, a tranny shop, if you drop off the tranny, will do the work for 500-650. I just got done doing all this about 2 months ago. If any other internals need to be replace like syncro sleavs or any gears the price will go up from there.
