I failed emissions with my new FD, so I'm wonder if anyone has some input for me. Here is the rundown:
Stock 94 Touring (except for greddy catback)
91,000 Miles (5,000 on rebuilt motor)

It failed pretty bad, but the person doing the emissions said that it wasn't the cat because it didn't fail accross the board. He suggested a tunup and new O2 sensor. I did that, but it is still running too rich. I will get some backfiring on decel, and I'm getting crappy gas milage. I get an intermitten check engine light. So I pulled the codes and got a error 16 and 11. Those read for the Air Intake Thermo Sensor and EGR. So my question is, would either of these cause the ECU to run richer, which in turn causes my car to fail emissions? Any other suggestions are welcomed also.

The AIT Sensor could definately cause problems. Basically the ECU is going to assume the coldest possible temp if it's bad and inject air accordingly. This is a failsafe to prevent the engine from going lean. The EGR wouldn't cause it to run rich, I believe.

Was your engine completely warmed up when it was tested? A good half-hour of driving at highway speed would be enough. Otherwise, it might still be running rich even if everything else was OK.

If the EGR isn't working right, I think that would make for more unburned hydrocarbons in the exhaust = too much emissions.

I don't know what effect a faulty intake temp sensor would have.

No the car was not fully warmed up. I basically drove it for about ten minutes to the emissions place. Maybe I should give that another shot.

Just an exhaust for a mod? Not even a downpipe? That's the first that I've heard of a failed emissions test... yeah, I 2nd the getting the engine nice and warm before doing the test. Few folks have done that here and have passed.

By the way, when you say you "pulled the codes and got a error 16 and 11", how exactly do you do that? I was just curious... so I know what to do if I do get a check engine light... thanks.

umm well there is choice C.... get a v8 and it will pass a lot easier

hybrid 4 banger should also make it easy to pass. No the car doesn't even have a DP yet, so I'm kinda confused on why it failed so bad. All my other 7s have only needed a Maincat and a Airpump in order to pass, all other emissions stuff didn't matter. I will try to make sure its nice and warm when I test it next time. Wish me luck :P

Let us know if it passes emissions when it is thoroughly warmed up. Good luck, and don't be revving the engine while you wait in line to be tested. Too much unburned fuel ends up in the exhaust.

For those of you that wanted an update, I was able to pass yesterday. I don't know which thing combination helped, but I just changed out the plugs (weren't too bad), O2 sensor, cleared the ECU codes, and drove it for about 45 min before testing. Thanks for the tips.
