I've got an original set of these and I'm finally installing them.

Install is going well but after a few years I figured I could ask whether there are any tips on installation methods that make for a long-term durable installation.

For example, does double-sided tape work well to hold the ballasts or should I fasten them in?

Is there anywhere that I should avoid running my wires?

Can't speak for the ballast mounting as I use Denso ballast for my retrofit and I mounted them inside the fender. For wiring, just make sure they don't get smush by the headlight bucket when it come down.

Did you get a PnP harness with Bi-Xenon relays with the kit?

 

Yeah, everything is plug and play. Just a bit of trimming of the fiberglass headlight housings.

Is everyone happy with the double-sided tape solution?

 

Do some searching around, I posted up some tips on my installation.

I ended up hiding the ballasts. I think I used zip ties to mount them, but at one point I think they were installed with 3M tape. Either way works just fine.

Functionally, either way will work, it's just aesthetics.

I used Velcro on a HID kit for my VR4.It has held up for 3 years.

 

+1 I used some nice "industrial" velcro to mount ballasts on my daily miata and it held up for over 4 years of daily driving in all weather conditions (I sold the car earlier this year).

I would still prefer a more permanent solution, but the velcro was simple and worked very well.

 

I ended up making a run to Lowe's and buying 2x4" industrial velcro. Then I zip-tied over top too.

If you look at the sheetmetal on the outside of the headlight pocket, there are two small holes on that panel. I put the ballast right in between, applied the velcro, then used a double zip-tie threaded through the two small holes to cinch it down. It's not going anywhere now.

I think the part of the installation that requires a bit of patience is the wiring to the light itself. I wound the headlight down by hand to check that everything was good where I can collected the extra wiring lengths.

I'm bumping this because I'm having trouble finding a suitable spot for the new style ballast they are using in the kit. All the places I have tried lead to issues when the headlight descends. The newer ballasts are larger from what I can tell in pictures which is making this problematic.

 

Since my last post I have switched to TRS ballast which I think should be the same as SBG, I mount it on the frame rail below the headlight, it's the location where most aftermarket dual oil cooler mount their bracket. Clearance to the headlight bezel is like 1-2mm, so it is tight.

 

The ballast that came with my kit included a flimsy little sliding bracket. I was able to use that to secure it within the fender using a bolt, with some double sided tape as well so it doesn't vibrate around.

Clearance was a little tight though. Be sure to check, check, and triple check that the headlight bucket isn't ramming anything.
