i would suggest avoiding synthetic if your car has been fine to this point. no reason to change it if there's nothing wrong.

Just avoid 10w-40 and use what Max recommended and you'll be fine.

How come no one uses 5w-30?

I believe the manual says you can use it...esp. in the winter.

Later,
Patrick

Just DON'T use Pennzoil! That stuff sucks the big donkey dick!

I prefer Valvoline Dura-Blend, in 10W-40, or regular Valvoline same weight. Castrol is always good, as are Mobil products. I've used Quaker State in the past with good results, too.

Basically, anything but Pennzoil!

I'd use that used lawnmower oil that Wal-Mart passes off as real oil under their....what is it?.....Tech brand?....before I'd use Pennzoil!

I work at a shop that uses havoline 10w30. I know most people use castrol, but since the oil is free I flush it through several times every oil change until the color is like new. I would rather use havoline that I can flush than castrol that I can't.

Back in my Chevelle days, I used Pennzoil, simply because my dad used it before me.....but every time I did any engine work, there would be this ucky, nasty, yellowish white pusy residue in the valve covers....and I was not alone in noticing this. Other Pennzoil users talked about this all the time. Also, the hydraulic lifters in my Chevelle would fail with some regularity, but once I switched oils, I quit having any oil related problems.
It made a believer out of me.

no synthetic

Synthetics have longer molecules. These engines run more like two stokes. They need to burn some oil in the lubrication process, or else it builds up in the engine and turbos. This is why the owners manual says no synthetics. You can put two stroke oil in the gas tank to get better oil dispersion.

Unfortunately, when someone asks a question like this, there are so many conflicting answeres that the question is not really answered. If I had to try to extract something from all this I guess it would be: Don't use Pennzoil, and DO use 10 W30, preferrably not synthetic... although that would be okay... as long as it's a certain kind...

Smile Oh goody, another oil discussion

I use Castol 10W30 during the winter.

This motorsports season, I plan to use my sponsor's oil--Motul 300V Competition 15W50, 100% syntetic. It's not cheap ($7-per-liter retail), but Motul 300V is apparently MUCH better than Mobil 1 (according to my sponsor's opinion).

I'll find out at my March 23 Putnam Park event!?

BTW, Motul 300V Competition 15W50 is available from Autosport Outfitters, www.autosportoutfitters.com Talk to Doug Livingston at 289-7221, and tell him I sent you!
