For those who have totalled their cars...
dude look up the blue book dealership price for your car and thats what they should give you plus any receipts for mods and what not and minus your deductible. if you fight it enough you could get that much.

You arent going to get much for it. I just got my car totaled and didnt get near as much as I had into it. I argued for over two months and it finally got to the point where my only other thing I could do would be sue the insurance company. At that point it could take many many more months. Good luck with what you get.
who cares about the tires and circumstances? is anyone going to answer the question:

Under california law you are entittled to fair market price of your vehicle.
I totalled my first FD due to an engine fire. That was in 98 and two months after I bought it, 36k miles on the clock.
First offer from the insurance was 13k lol... I had payed 17.7K IIRC. After sending them several newpaper clippings of what these cars were going for they came back with a reasonable offer of 17.9K. $200 more than what I had payed for the car.

To those that answered - thanks.
To those that wasted time scorning me - please dont waste your time replying. It hadnt rained in 3 days, and the streets were PLENTY dry. With the tires on it I didnt even drive it when it was wet out for this specific reason. There was a puddle of standing water in a low lying area of the street that I didnt see. (and still didnt see until after I had already wrecked. I still have NO IDEA what water was doing there given how long it had been since it rained. Every other street in town was perfectly dry) I was going about 45-50mph. It just so happens where it was hit was perfect to total the car given the focused energy of the impact on the fire hydrant I hit. (side impact on fire hydrant right where the drivers door connects)
Dont tell me no one on here has ever put off buying new tires because they werent ready to spend nearly $1000 on a set...

buy the car back from your insurance company as well and part it out, or even just resell it on here.
hell, I'd buy it even :P
not to be an *** or anything, but if you're spending $1000 on a set of tires you're either shopping in the wrong places, or you have rims that are WAY too big.

like others have said, do some research, figure out how much it would cost to get another FD like yours (in factory condition, forget about recouping costs of the mods) and make sure thats how much the insurance company cuts the check for
... good luck with it all though, hope you get top dollar for your FD and get another one soon
Insurance Payment on totalled car
My insurance Co's first offer was $10,500, ('93 with virtually no mods. but only 10K miles on a new engine). Otherwise reasonable condition. It was obvious from various discussions with the insurance co. that they had no idea about the cost of replacing it. So..... I bitched and complained. I got comps. from this forum. I got comps. from various ads on the web and in local papers (few). I sent it all to them in writing, expressing my concerns and opinions. I threw several fits and temper tantrums! I strongly expressed my absolute inability to get a true replacement at that price. I requested the basis of their report, (there was very, very little to sustaniate their offer). I was a pain in their neck for 2 to 3 weeks.
I finished up with $15,900 + CA state tax.
The message is - don't give in. Your position is "I need to replace it with a like vehicle." End of story. "I will settle for nothing less."
Knowledge is on your side. This is an oddball for them. They be glad to get it closed if you work on 'em hard enough.
Go get 'em.
