For those who have totalled their cars...

What payout did insurance give you? What miles were on your car and when did it happen?

BryanDowns 08-24-06 08:31 PM

ttt. Come on people, I am worried that I wont get enough to get another...

Aeka GSR 08-24-06 09:30 PM

they are obligated to make you whole. If they dont give you enough print out a shitload of for sale ads and bring them in and bitch.

Terrh 08-24-06 09:35 PM

don't sign ANYTHING until you're happy with the amount you've been offered.

BryanDowns 08-24-06 09:57 PM

Would your advice change if you were the sole car in the accident and its 100% undeniably your fault? (standing water in the road, nearly bald tires... dont ask :( )

bigcox_03 08-24-06 10:02 PM

dude look up the blue book dealership price for your car and thats what they should give you plus any receipts for mods and what not and minus your deductible. if you fight it enough you could get that much.

GoodfellaFD3S 08-24-06 10:05 PM

I'll be the first to say it.

You should be ashamed of yourself. What in the hell are you doing driving around with bald tires?

Had to have been going at somewhat of a high rate of speed to total the car. Riding on bald tires in the rain or, after a rainfall....Not very smart

Cgotto6 08-24-06 10:30 PM

You arent going to get much for it. I just got my car totaled and didnt get near as much as I had into it. I argued for over two months and it finally got to the point where my only other thing I could do would be sue the insurance company. At that point it could take many many more months. Good luck with what you get.

jacobcartmill 08-25-06 12:58 AM

who cares about the tires and circumstances? is anyone going to answer the question:

Doesn't matter that it was your fault. I won't change the value of your car.

cloead 08-25-06 09:54 AM

I got $13,700, and bought the car back for $1000. Parted out what was left and just about broke even.

Edit: Chassis had about 88k miles on it.

Montego 08-25-06 03:11 PM

Under california law you are entittled to fair market price of your vehicle.

I totalled my first FD due to an engine fire. That was in 98 and two months after I bought it, 36k miles on the clock.

First offer from the insurance was 13k lol... I had payed 17.7K IIRC. After sending them several newpaper clippings of what these cars were going for they came back with a reasonable offer of 17.9K. $200 more than what I had payed for the car.

BryanDowns 08-25-06 04:49 PM

To those that answered - thanks.

To those that wasted time scorning me - please dont waste your time replying. It hadnt rained in 3 days, and the streets were PLENTY dry. With the tires on it I didnt even drive it when it was wet out for this specific reason. There was a puddle of standing water in a low lying area of the street that I didnt see. (and still didnt see until after I had already wrecked. I still have NO IDEA what water was doing there given how long it had been since it rained. Every other street in town was perfectly dry) I was going about 45-50mph. It just so happens where it was hit was perfect to total the car given the focused energy of the impact on the fire hydrant I hit. (side impact on fire hydrant right where the drivers door connects)

Dont tell me no one on here has ever put off buying new tires because they werent ready to spend nearly $1000 on a set...

Terrh 08-25-06 07:23 PM

buy the car back from your insurance company as well and part it out, or even just resell it on here.

hell, I'd buy it even :P

not to be an ass or anything, but if you're spending $1000 on a set of tires you're either shopping in the wrong places, or you have rims that are WAY too big. :)

insurance companys do not cover aftermarket modifications, thats why if you total your car and dont buy it back you have the right to go pull any non-stock parts back off the car before it gets sent to the crusher... some insurance companys have policies which will cover aftermarket parts, but you have to ask specifically for that coverage and not many people do it so not all insurance companys offer it...

like others have said, do some research, figure out how much it would cost to get another FD like yours (in factory condition, forget about recouping costs of the mods) and make sure thats how much the insurance company cuts the check for :icon_tup:... sorry to hear about your accident, but you were kind of asking for it, whats 1000 dollars now or 1000 dollars later when it comes to your safety, hell take out a loan if you need to, but if your spending a grand on tires you do need to shop elsewhere, i can get full race rubber for my 17's for less than that :dunno:... good luck with it all though, hope you get top dollar for your FD and get another one soon :icon_tup:...

Insurance Payment on totalled car

My insurance Co's first offer was $10,500, ('93 with virtually no mods. but only 10K miles on a new engine). Otherwise reasonable condition. It was obvious from various discussions with the insurance co. that they had no idea about the cost of replacing it. So..... I bitched and complained. I got comps. from this forum. I got comps. from various ads on the web and in local papers (few). I sent it all to them in writing, expressing my concerns and opinions. I threw several fits and temper tantrums! I strongly expressed my absolute inability to get a true replacement at that price. I requested the basis of their report, (there was very, very little to sustaniate their offer). I was a pain in their neck for 2 to 3 weeks.

I finished up with $15,900 + CA state tax.

The message is - don't give in. Your position is "I need to replace it with a like vehicle." End of story. "I will settle for nothing less."

Knowledge is on your side. This is an oddball for them. They be glad to get it closed if you work on 'em hard enough.

Go get 'em.

F0RSAKEN 08-25-06 09:59 PM

We need to sticky a thread thats sole contents are the running total of non-totalled FD's left in the states.
