Thinking of selling '94R2 and going Viper.

Well I have had my '94 for some time now and I love it. However I have always wanted a Viper GTS as well. It seems lately that the RX has become a car that has been molested by broke *** kids and ricers that don't know what they are doing. Basically any highshcool kid with a little money can and has been picking theese up cheap. Many already have problems that go unchecked or the new owner can't afford to fix stuff and the car goes to hell. I'm tired of seeing "12k ,that is a little high" or " Looking for a RX7 9k or less" or "What BOV is the loudest for my compleatly stock car" For me the RX7 has lost some of its mistique.
So to the point, I am looking at getting a used Viper GTS, and wonder if anyone who has driven both can give me some comparo information. Is the Viper worth going under payments again. Thanks

Please drive one before you to sell your FD. My brother did and was not impressed after driving it. You actually have to get in it and drive it to see what I mean.

Not sure why you are asking if it's worth it.. Isn't that YOUR personal decision since you will be the one footing the bill?

you spelled mystique wrong, but that's cool.....what a great post

it's a world increasingly filled with tattoo, ear ring, and gold chain wearing, immaciated white trash, foul mouthed little PUNKS that listen to rap music

but they don't belong in an FD

of course, you can always buy an NSX or 911, but then you get the arrogant, puffed up crowd

I like Z06 drivers

I respect the Z06 but there are so many C5s and I just don't like the Corvette. NSX to overpriced, 911 turbo is out of my price range by far. I think the Viper is the next logical step.
The reason I asked is to get opinions on the Viper, that's why I asked, I have to make the final decision but it is always prudent to ask for input first.

Vipers are sweet and the GTS's have come down in price alot if you get a used one with a couple thousand miles on them. I think the 96-97's(or maybe it was 97-98's?) have a little more agressive cam and tiny bit stiffer suspension.

The only thing that sucks is the price of aftermarket parts. 3k for a exhaust system is not my thing.

I think the Viper is a damn fine sports car. I've also toyed with the idea of selling my FD and getting a used Viper, NSX or Porsche.

However, I could care less whether 16 year olds are able to buy the car, put neon lights, loud BOVs, huge wings, bling bling rims, etc on the car. If I like it, I get it. If you are looking for "status" in a car, I think you need to do some soul searching.

Currently, I still like my FD. The only idea that has remotely crossed my mind was getting a wrecked Porsche and getting it back on the road. Unfortunately, I lack the skills to make it happen.

Very true and after awhile more of these cars will be destroyed. Hold on to yours it will always be unique and still is one of the best handling cars in the world. You will always be able to find a Viper for sale however a good clean FD good luck finding one let alone an R2 like yours. Honestly, i would keep it.

I was thinking about going with a viper also, until i found out that our local dodge shop can only do some engine repair, and any serious engine work, would have to be shipped up to michigan to be done. It's been a couple of years when i heard this, and don't remember why they said it would be shipped up to michigan,i think that's where they are manufactured! Viper is not in my price range, and being high end sports car, something will break. Just my 2 cents! I'd stay with rx7

When I sold my 7 I came very very close to getting a '96 Viper GTS.

In fact I already had a Viper club buddy check it out for me (they are the Pres. of the NC Viperclub (and her hubby)). They gave me the thumbs up... and I was going to go get it.. but I wasn't really sure that it was what I wanted.

It certainly turns heads. It's certainly exotic. But when I drove them I never got that "holy ****" feeling that I had in my single turbo 7.... or that I felt in the various modded Supras I'd driven.

Sure you can mod Vipers ... but it's so damn expensive. I knew that I couldn't be happy with a stock Viper. I also knew that headers and exhaust were about $5k! NOS/propane injection is the cheapest way to go.

Anyway... I agree... go drive a few Vipers and see if it does it for you. It might... but it didn't for me. The interior is crude but that's OK. The pedals ARE offset and that drove me nuts!

But I could have dealt with it IF IT WAS SUPER SCARY FAST! But it wasn't. My Supra is! I'm not saying get a Supra... but definetly drive a few Vipers before you do anything.

Good luck!

You should email Brooks Weisblat. He was an experienced FD modder who finally made the move to a Viper GTS.

His current website is at:

yeah it would be a very good idea to email Brooks fikse@yahoo.com

My dad has a 96 rt/10
when I used to drive the viper before I thought it was crazy fast but when I got my rx-7 with mods I was thinking to myself that I would be winning if I raced it. It has A LOT of torque and is way out of control on the street if you go wot. The things I don't like about it is that I can barely push in the clutch with the seat all the way up I'm 5' 9", the suspension is so hard it feels like you are crashing every time you hit a rock in the road, it feels huge and heavy driving it, it oversteers, the the power is very flat and not all of a sudden like on our rx-7s. I just think that it's for very rich rednecks or people trying to show off. There are some people like brooks that actually love cars that have them but that's rare.

The main thing that I like is that they are really reliable and you can run the **** out of them and it's the most amazing looking car and gets more looks than even a ferrari and it's very damn fast if driven right.

My dad will probably sell you his if you are interested it looks amazing. White with blue stripes.

Thanks Snook. I am looking for GTSs only however. I was looking at the mods and it is like fifty billion dollars to mod the car. I have just always loved them. I do need to drive one and have no intention of buying one before. I have seen Brooks' sight (I used to look at his sight before the Viper too). He seems to know his stuff.
I suppose I could just go with a single turbo or some BNRs and get some kind of body kit for the 7 to make it look differant from the pack, but I havn't seen any that don't look rediculous in my opinion.

Get the viper

I have a 93 rx7, have driven a 2001 gts viper for about 250 miles. The viper is a better sports car no matter what. I love the turbo but if I can get the same power without it then I don't want it. I disagree with the person who says it feels heavy and understeers, simply not true. It is light and nimble.

I think the rx7 is a better looking car and I enjoy the novelty of owning a rotary rather than a pushrod v-10 designed for a truck, however if I were to going to race the car I would take the viper hands down.

Supras.. great cars, lots of power, few problems, looks like a giant cat fish. Those poor supras are going the way of rice somewhat too.
Basically, within the confines of my paycheck, it's going to be Keep the 7 or go for a Viper. I can't think of any other car that has the qualities and is not one of the cars I mantioned above. I really wish I could get a Ferrari, and mark my words, if I have to sell a lung I will have one some day!

Cars aren't THAT important! They go from point A to point B.

I know what you're saying about young kids and RX7s - I like the area I'm in - it's a pretty populated area with only about 2-3 FDs running around here - I'm the only heavily modded one. In a sense I feel like a have a Ferrari since FDs are so rare out here and mine's a clean one. I know a guy that sold his R2 for a yellow 95 RT/10 - it is incredible looking. It got my FD in the looks department. He just got a 200 shot and is putting down 520+ rwhp - ran a 12.2 at 123 mph on street tires. They are fast and with a little laughing gas can be made sickening fast. I want to race him soon - it would be interesting. He says he misses his FD and shouldn't have sold it. Definitely drive one and see if you like it. A single FD or BNR-twin powered FD will be more htna enough to satisfy your power needs though.

things i would consider...

1. do you want a look at me car (viper) or a more subtle car (fd)

2. do you care about how the HP is produced? some people consider the engine viper "crude"

3. insurance cost, i would guess insurance on the viper is more than the fd.

I do enjoy the "unknown" factor of driving an FD....most people don't know what it is (before F&F hardly anyone knew what it was), or what it can do with mods

ubiquitous Mustang and F body drivers in Charlotte don't see me coming....they don't consider me to be a threat, until they get eaten alive....and I dig that

with a Viper, of course any stealth/sleeper factor is completely out the window

trust me, Jim Lab will have have a great time surprising more than a few Viper, 911TT, Supra, and Ferrari owners when he gets his car done (if it ever gets finished)

650 N/A hp in an FD?? gotta like it

i dont think it is the stop light to stop light action that makes you want the rx7 with gobs of power. we have a friend with a 911 carrerra 4 and its beautiful. granted our rx7's will take him out every time, its the whole im driving something better now feeling. i would love to own a porsche over an rx7. i dont see that happening anytime soon though. i wish donovan luck in getting the viper if that is what he wants. he treats his cars so well, i know that he wont have any real problems with it. hey, you think rick will work on the viper
