If you plan on purchasing that car I would reccomend that you have AT LEAST another $7k handy to go through all the other likely problems it has. My guess would be the engine is either the original and needs replaced, OR it was a bad rebuild and still needs replaced. Especially just considering the low asking price of $6500. That is just an assumption, but it is an educated one. My second thought is, that if you could not find the answer you were origninally looking for due to laziness, do not buy this (or any) FD because you do not have the drive or determination needed to own/maintain one. Sorry for being an ***, but I am just trying to save you some money and heartache..

If you really want that car I highly recommend a daily driver and then this car your "project" car. As others have said, it's cheap because someone doesn't know what they have or because there's lots of things wrong with it and wants to get rid of it quick.

If you end up purchasing it, it'll probably be quite a "project" car. At least you'll learn a lot about the car.

Good luck.

I was in the same situation when I first bought my FD. I saw an FD for $8K and I had the money to buy, but it was an automatic. I also thought about an automatic to manual swap, but my brother talked me out of it, because the car will most likey have a lot of other problems when I buy it, so why would I make things more stressful and try to convert to manual?

I ended up buying a 5 speed FD for 10k, and it STILL needed a LOT of work. The only good thing, was that when I bought the car, the engine only had about 30,000 miles never been overheated, turbos were already replaced, vacuum hoses, radiator, and the clutch.

BUT these are the problems I had to fix: crappy peeling cameleon paint job, two broken headlight covers, clutch master and slave cylinder failed at the same time, Brake lights did NOT work, ABS pump was leaking, HORRIBLE oil pan leak, OMP leaking, Oil cooler lines leaking, turbo coolant hoses failed along with other random coolant hoses, drivers exterior door handle broke, drivers lock cylinder failed, Passengers side door locks did not work properly, transmission grinding, had a "click click start" issue for about a year until figured out what was wrong, P/S pressure hose leaking, P/S pump failed, Alternator and Starter failed, outer tie rod boots ripped, car would NOT pass smog, bad ECU, blown shocks all around and broken shock mounts, drivers window switch failed, HORRIBLE hesitation at 3000 RPM, loud clunking in the rear under acceleration and decceleration, broken motor mounts, annoying rattling and squeaking noises while driving and and im sure im forgetting a lot of things

So in my opinion if you REALLY want a 5 speed, pass this car up, its not worth it. Continue your search, you WILL find one

RE: ChristianRX7 and Concerns

ChristianRX7,

I am going to tell you about my experience and how it directly relates to your own.

In June 2007, I purchased a Vintage Red 1993 Mazda RX7 AUTOMATIC.

I shipped it from WA to Ontario, Canada. I paid about 8500US (when it was near par with Canada).

I thought to myself, I will just change it Manual. Which I have done, and it was not as difficult as everyone says, but you have to be patient. I paid 1500 to convert it from Auto to Manual including parts. The car runs great (the tranny/manual part worked great).

When I bought it, I did so by pictures only, no test drive nothing. What I did not know what, the car had a oil leak and rad fluid leak. Both I have fixed, luckily, the rad was leaking because it was a piece of garbage ebay rad which I replaced (actually Jim at Rotary Dynamics did it for me) with a Koyo rad ($600 CAD). I also had the oil pan fixed (which was the cause for the leak, not the stupid oil metering pump which is usually a head ache!) ($600 CAD).

My car for 8500 came with parts that were worth more than I knew. It had MazdaSpeed Cluster (worth 800-1k US) and 99 spec turbos and a bunch of greddy aftermarket stuff (which I took out and sold). So the cost of the car after selling the garbage I did not want was about 6k.

My engine is strong, my turbos are strong (now running at 14psi with Rotary Dynamic's Intercooler setup) and I am just doing interior and later paint.

I was lucky. If the rad fuild leak had been leaking into the engine, thats a rebuild! 4k-5k! If the Oil leak had been an engine issue, thats another big bill. Either way I would have spent a lot more money when I could have just bought one that was running well and was manual.

You need people who know what they are doing to work on your car. Get someone you trust to look at it, drive it and check it out. At a minimum compression test, and at least check out the car in depth look.

Don't buy it in a hurry, I did, but I thought for the price it was worth it. Its never worth it. Just be patient. The tan interior is a pain!!!!! So if you keep looking go black!! Its costly to buy black so don't spend money on it unless you love TAN!

If you need any help or suggestions contact me. Be prepared to spend 5-6k on top of the cost of the car.

I have spent nearly 5k so far, and I am no where near done.

Luckily engine is not -yet- an issue.

Good luck

Converting to an OEM black interior is costly. Im doing it right now and sourcing some of the pieces for a good price is a pain. Those pieces also tend to have wear and shipping damage. Search for the right car for you right from the beginning. If I could have done it all again thats what I would have done. Instead I bought a 12k FD with a strong engine and some reliability mods and ended up spending a pretty penny just to finish the reliability mods alone.

Owning an FD is great! Your pockets just doesn't think so. I've already invested 10k just to replace the motor, turbo and everything that else that needs to be replaced. A sacrifce well worth to own one of the greatest vehicles made.
