Testing ecu outside of car

So im looking for a used ecu for my fd and i found a pettit remapped ecu for a good price. the guy is getting rid of it cause he is going single. So heres my question, is there any way to test the ecu before installing it? Or am i just gonna have to trust a total stranger? I would go with a PFC but im a little hurtin for cash and cant afford to get it tuned, not to mention just the PFC alone is twice the price of the pettit one i found. Any help would be great

you can open the box check for the daughterboard. look carefully at the solder points for any breaks/burn spots. that is about it. would only take a second to plug into your car if you are going to pick it up

ECU's are EXTREMELY hardy. I seriously doubt anything would be wrong with it. That said, it's pretty much impossible to test anything on the ECU without hooking it up to the car.

The ECU should have a Pettit sticker on it if it's chipped by them, BTW.

Go for it - I think you'll be just fine.

My best advice would be to make sure that the seller is well known in the community and you can feel good about purchasing from them, but thats a given with buying anything used. FWIW, I was screwed over buying a used Pettit ECU from a member of this forum, and Im now out $400. Just be careful who you are dealing with, a good deal can turn around real quick.
