Test Drive

Hi,

I test drove an 1993 touring today and there must have been a problem (I hope thats not normal rx7 performance). I know this has been beaten to death about the secondary turbos, but here is what happened. If I went WOT in 2nd gear for example, at around 3000 rpm, the car would boost, and then it would fall flat on its face at around 5000 rpm. Up to 5000, I could hear the turbo, and then after 5000, I couldnt even hear a turbo anymore. Above 5000 was pretty pathetic.

Is that a problem with the secondary turbo?

Thanks

Jeff

Test drive a functional FD and you will fall in love.

But, that problem you experienced is just one of the many problems that will come from an improperly cared for FD.

Rarley, you will find an FD that has not been through tremendous BS by their owners except for the few that reside on this forum and actually appreciate these machines.

Usually not a problem with the secondary turbo itself. There is a control system that has many potential failure points, if the problem is there and you find it, it's usually a simple fix. Finding it isn't so simple.

Another common problem is clogged pre-cat or catalytic converters - boosting in the higher RPM ranges flows the most air, and a clogged cat will greatly reduce high-end boost. Put in a good cat, and problem is usually fixed.

Although it's tempting to blame the owner for problems, problems sometimes do arise of their own accord and not everyone has the patience to solve them, or the money to pay the right person to solve it. If you don't fall into either category, think carefully before purchasing a 3rd gen.

Thanks alot for your replies. I definately have a passion for RX7's, and I have owned three 1st generation rx7's. I had a street port, weber carb, msd ignition, full exhaust, LSD, etc... but I will shut up now because I know this is the 3rd gen forum. I am just waiting for the right 3rd generation to come along.

So does my attempt at a diagnosis sound like the second turbo is not spooling, or that the Cat is too clogged to allow proper flow?

From what I have read, the second turbo spools up at around 5500 rpm right?

What I felt was solid acceleration until around 4500, and then the acceleration tapered off. Do they usually pull harder and harder after 4500?

I am sorry for the dumb questions, but I am very curious.

I cant wait to drive a proper third generation, and to own one.

Jeff,

These cars just start to become fun past 4.5. If you are fortunate enough to live local to someone / know somone that has a 7 fully functional, try to persuade them to let you take it out for a test drive... Bring a change of pants too, you might get a little carried away.

In regards to the issue you experienced, its probably something related to the "rats nest" which is located just below the UIM. Why is it called a rats nest? Well, if you have the luxury of buying a 7 with the Sequential System still running and happen to take the UIM off, you will see a horriffic eye sore that will make you cringe at the thought of workin on this car. -- its the primary reason why alot of people have gone single / non-seq. In other terms, there are just a **** load of vaccume lines that if have not yet been replaced, have a tendency to get hard and crack / leak / cause alot of stupid bs.

At 4,500RPM, the secondary turbo is supposed to come online. At that time, you should feel a slight kick, and yes, it does pull harder after transition (4,500RPM).

If you've got basic mechanic skills, or are willing to learn, you can probably fix this for under a few hundred bucks. Or even for free, depending on the problem.

You might try getting a quote for new turbos from the dealer - and see if he'll knock that off the purchase price.

Unless you are getting it at a nice discount, I'd be concerned about getting an FD with problems such as that. If they were too lazy to fix that problem, they might have been too lazy to do other maintenance as well.

Thanks for your input everybody. I will definately wait to find a better seven. It is my dream car and I am not going to get one unless it is "the one".

i had the same problem in mine and found out there was a huge slice in one of the vacuum hoses. I simply cut the sliced part off, and reattached the hose as if it were a new hose since it was still long enough, and i was getting even harder boost from the secondary turbos than when i first bought it. but yeah.. just as everyone says on this thread, it could be many things, but try checking out the easy ones first such as the one I mentioned and you can save $$$.

I see you are from Kelowna. On Canadatrader.com I saw a montego blue RX7 FD for sale in Kelowna. This one: http://www.canadatrader.com/result/d...7137318&pgno=1

Does the owner of this car live by the Cedar Creek Estate Winery? My parents live in Peachland and last summer while visiting them I saw a montego blue FD parked at a house by this winery. I have a montego blue FD myself.

In terms of the secondary turbo problems like what has already mention the problem could be something as simple as a vacuum hose to a bad turbo.

It must be nice to drive an FD in February; mine has been parked in the garage for the winter since October and probably won’t make it out of the garage till mid April- May. I have to get my *** moved to Kelowna.

Hey,

Sorry, I just saw your reply now. The link does not show the car anymore, but that was likely the one I test drove. It had 198,000kms on it.

It is awesome living in Kelowna, being from Calgary originally, I feel your cold *** weather pain. We will be golfing soon.

Out of curiosity, how much did you pay for your FD?

Jeff
