tach-o gone wacko!

my tach just started jumpin up and down today out of nowhere.... then came to rest at 0... and eventually started working again but displaying the wrong RPM. i suspect that its NOT a fault in the actual tach but a fault in the sender unit or connection between the two. can anyone tell me what feeds the tach its output? (is it off of one of the coil triggers or am i remembering that incorrectly.... and does it pass to the ECU before going to the gauge cluster?) ive been having problems with bad connections at the sender units for various unrelated things recently... i guess i need to just unplug the entire harness and clean all the connectors one of these days cause things are going bezerk. thanks for the help as always . -heath

According to page C-1 of the Body Electrical Manual, the tach gets its data direct from the CPU. The CPU I would imagine is using the crank sensors. You might start with the connector between the body harness and the gauge cluster.

Hey Heath

1) Consult these 2 threads:

- https://www.rx7club.com/3rd-generation-specific-1993-2002-16/tach-not-working-ive-searched-too-449013/

2) Gimme your email...there's a PDF about this I think you'll find useful. It's too large to upload.

I don't want ot thread jack here, but it is sort of the same subject. My odometer is blank. I can't see it with the lights on or off. Some times it flickers, but not enough to read it. Anyone else everf delt with this?

recon, there is a light bulb behind the odometer that lights it up whenever the IGN is on. Sounds like yours needs fixing (loose, corroded, bad, etc). You'll have the remove the entire cluster to get to it.
