Unhappy tach help....im at a total loss

OK first off ill say the problem im having.

It started when i purchased the car, aka a year and a half ago. Bought it as a roller dropped a new motor in bam good to go. Since day 1 the tach has never worked. When i got the car runnning the tach needle was bouncing around all over the place.

My first thought was oh this is electrical lets check grounds, checked all the factory grounds sanded down the contact surfaces, replaced cracked wires, and added in a grounding kit of my own. This helped a little now the tach needle just bounced around less.

So i started doing some forum trolling to find a solution, came across the similar problem that many had related to the capacitors, resistors, and solder locations in the tach motor being shitty. So pulled the cluster and replaced the capacitors and resistors and resoldered everything. dropped it back in the car started it up and poof! it worked!....for about 3 minutes then went back to bouncing around all over the damn place. this time it flung itself around so god damn violently that it actually spun the needle off the motor...WTF :scra tch:

At this point i thought well **** me, thinking it was just the tach itself that had crapped out i bought a new cluster and swapped the tach from that one in. Finished it up tonight, started the car and took it for a test drive. Well its a def improvement but still didnt solve the problem, now instead of the needle flying around like a spider monkey on crack it just chills at 1500rpm and doesnt move at all.

At this point im beginning to think that maybe the computer in the cluster is haywire? and/or the sensor that measures rpm is crapping out...but as the title says im at a total ******* loss here.......

You haven't had any answers because this has been covered ad infinitum. Tachs go bad, no one has truly found a good fix for bad tachs, and most likely the replacement tach was bad as well.

'93 tachs almost all go bad. Later tachs seem to be a bit hardier, I haven't had any problems (knock on wood) with my '94 tach.
