Try learning how to shift. While your at it grab a B & M shortshifter to make those 2nd to 3rd gear shifts easier. How many miles do you have on your car?

When replacing your 5th gear synchro, also replace your Shift select spindle. They upgraded it with a stronger spring so it's harder to miss the 2nd to 3rd gear shift. This should extend the life of the 5th gear. I'll try to find the part number later and post it.

I have my B&M sitting in the garage waiting for me to put it in. @ the present time though, I am purchasing my fifth gear syncro and would like to know would it be prudent to replace all syncro's or is it not necessary? And also from what I gather because I have the B&M short shift I don't need the shift selector spindle.<----- Is this corect?

RX-7 ZX-9, I think you can buy the spring of the shift select spindle by itself now. When I was buying my spindle they said each piece was available separately. The spring would be a lot less than the $30 for the whole assembly and the spring is the only thing different (firmer). You have to take a lot more of the tranny apart to do the other synchros and if you don't have any grinding I'd just get in do the 5th gear synchro and get out.

DBreeze, I kept mine in with the B&M and like the feel. The B&M has a spring loaded throw in it to keep you out of 5th until you want it but I think the spindle is more accurate as it presses directly on the shift linkage designed by Mazda rather than the after market shifter determining where 3rd and 5th are -- if that makes sense?

The tranny has 91k miles. I'll try checking on getting a new spindle spring tomorrow. Funny thing is that there was absolutely no hint that the tranny was going to go this time. I was just driving around normally not shifting really when it happened. Bye the way...the transmission shop told me they found me a low milage 1997 RX-7 tranny for $1000...anyone wanna bet someone's lying?

P.S. one of the rotary shops told me one time that the Turbo 2 5th gear synchro was a little beefier looking than the 3rd gen....anyone know more about this ?

These part numbers that were mentioned are to be used at a Mazda dealer correct?? I would hate to go in there and ask for those parts then see the usual FD price increase!! Thanx in advance for any info. Also, I think that my 2nd gear synchro is starting to shyte the bed on me. Anyone gone through this?

Yep those are the same part #s i just used. Total price was around $29. I know the spring was like $2.50. By the way u might wanna order now there's only one spring left in the entire country! Maybe i should advertise it on EBAY because of its rarity.
