Symptoms of a bad Metering Oil Pump

I first thought the turbos blew... But that's not the case, so I figured an oil seal went somewhere in the motor. Upon doing a little more reading, I found that a bad MOP can push too much oil into the motor. Anyone experienced a MOP failure?

Symptoms: Excessive smoke. All oil. So much, that it started seeping through the gaskets on the exhaust manifold and burning on it. That's it. No ECU code, no harsh idle, no loss of power, no low boost... just a James Bond smoke screen. Even after warmup. Smoke calmed down, but was still there, and very thick on boost.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Justin

The ECU will throw a code and put it into limp mode at first sign of a oil metering pump failure. The oil is likely to come from your turbos oil seal. It probably is blown and needs a rebuild. Why did you not figure your turbos were the culprit to the excessive smoke? Just reading, "when I get onto the boost, I get heavy smoke" that right there should tell you. Good luck. Try switching to a thicker oil if you are using 10w-30 to help with teh problem.

Reason I voted against the turbos oil seal being bad is there was no oil in the intake track. None (more than the normail mist) anywhere in the IC or elbow. The smoke was constant, just heavier on boost. Turbos have almost no shaft play, spin freely, and look in overall good operating condition.

I will take a second look and see what I come up with. Thanks for the reply!

Did you check your TPS sensor?

No. Please enlighten me. What does the TPS sensor have to do with excessive oil burn? (I'm not being an ***...)

Not sure the technical explanation but I left it disconnected by accident once and it did exactly what you described -plugged it back in and all was well.

Sorry for bringing up an old thread.

I have the same smoke problem. Lots of white/grey smoke from exhaust and some from around the turbos. Oil on the sparkplugs. Engine starts and runs ok, but smokes directly.

jdhuegel1: Did you solve the problem?
