swapping out turbos help
Hey guys, how difficult is it to take out the stock twins and bolt new ones up? They are the same thing but have about 100,000 less miles. My car has been sitting for right at 6 months now while i've been trying to find a mechanic, and if it wasn't too difficult i was going to try it myself with some help form my uncle. Is there a website that has step by step instructions? Thanks everyone.

Are you swapping the entire Turbo assembly w/ manifold, or are you "taking off" the old turbos and installing the new ones on your old manifold??
It's a real easy job if your doing a complete swap.

It's your first time so expect the project to take about 3-5 hours. It takes me about 1.5 hours to get them off but I've done it alot. (Turbo rebuild kit gone bad).
Assuming you've sprayed and soaked the Pre-Cat/DP studs/nuts with PB Blaster overnight,.....this is the procedure I'd recommend....
1)- Take off all intake pipes/hoses along with the CRV and BOV hoses connected to the Air Box/Filters.
2)- Disconnect Air Pump hoses and Take off Air Pump. ALSO, disconnect the DP/Pre-Cat O2 sensor from it's plug located behind the UIM.
3)- Engage E.R brake and jack/lift front-end car up and secure with Stands on each side and also place Jack
(floor jack preferably) on center of front engine brace for added security.
4)- Take off front left wheel/tire.
5)- Disconnect Y-Pipe couplings and take them off. Then unscrew both 10mm flange nuts off primary turbo.
6)- From underneath, take off both 10mm flange nuts that secure secondary Turbo air pipe and then from the top, wiggle air pipe out.
7)- Take off both y-pipe flange nuts on the secondary Turbo.
8)- Unplug the 3 vacuum hoses conected to the CCV on the y-pipe (you may want to lable each vacuum hose for correct re-placement)
9)- Take off Y-Pipe.
10)- Take off DP/Pre-cat nuts off. Studs may come off with the nuts, but it's okay.
11)- Take off DP/Pre-cat Bolts off from Main-Cat connection.
12)- Take off DP/Pre-Cat from underneath vehicle.
13)- TIP: Disconnect the vacumm hoses off the the pre-control and Wastegate actuators and take the actuators off the turbo assembly. There are 4- 13mm bolts and 2-little c-clips that have to be removed.
14)- Disconnect the oil inlet line and the 2 water supply lines that mate with the respected Turbo supply lines. These are located in the area where the Y-Pipe was.
15)- The front oil outlet line coming out of the Turbo Bearing Housing which is a flange bolted onto the Block should be easy to get to from the top. There are two 10mm bolts you'll have to unscrew.
16)- From underneath, unscrew the 2- 10mm nuts that secure the rear oil oultet pipe onto the Block.
17)- The Turbo assembly is secured onto the Turbo Control Actuator Manifold/Block via 8 Nuts. (7) are 14mm and (1) is 12mm. take them off. Slide the Turbo assembly out through the top. Presto.
Put on the new Turbo assembly in reverse order.

pb blaster to penetrate the bolts....they are on there tight and might brake off. just blast it on all the bolts and let it sit before you start. that's my pointer. had to swap them twice in like a month w/o a problem. thought it would be hard but it was ok. just time consuming. oh yeah, you will need jackstands or a ramp to drive up on. kvn
