I was under the impression that '93 ecu isnt compatible with a '94-'95 so i would doubt it would be compatible with a '97. Maybe I heard wrong though. No first hand experience.

The 93 ECU is not compatible with the 97, one is an 8 bit unit the other is a 16 bit.

93-95 SAME ECU 8-bit
96-98 SAME ECU 16-bit
99-02 SAME ECU 32-bit

Tha harness from the 97 and the 97 computer should hook right up. I believe based on thought of mine, that there is only 2 plugs for the ECU. EVEN though there is space for 3. I will check though....

One is coming from body not from engine.

For series 6, two wiring comes from body.

WRONG..............Plain & simple. This guy above is simply wrong

RX-7

series-6.......92-95 = 8bit
series-7.......96-98 = 8bit
series-8.......99-02 = 16bit

RX-8

series-1.......03-?? = 32bit

The pics shown by PUMA is from a series-8 version & is not the same as your series-7 engine despite the fact that they are both a JDM engine. Mazda made more changes for the series-8 than they did for the series-7. With the updated 16-bit ECU, there was more electronic control over the emmissions hence why you will find no pipe ports in the intake manifold. Hence why the soleniod box replaces the spagetti nest that previously sat under the manifold on the S-6 + S-7. Plus other changes. The coils are relocated a bit to cater for the emmisions box (pictured).

Think about it kiddies, Its 1995, Ford has just bought a controlling share. The company is bleeding red ink throughout the world. The series-7 just got canned from the export list. Its due out in 96 & you have a tiny tiny budget for updating.

Thats why the series-7 update had very few changes from the original series-6. Fast forward to 99 & there was more money to spend as Mazda where on the road to recovery, hence why there was more changes to the car for 99+

On the subject of pin outs for the series-7 JDM harness, I have a Jap-spec + Export spec series-6 wiring manual but that used the same plugs as all the export versions (92-95). Series-7 updates where simply pages sent to dealers to staple into the manual. So each time I have worked on them, despite the plug being different. I have simply traced them out as the colour code on the wires is pretty much the same.

I didnt make it to the car, long day....

Anyway I have my stock ECU here. 3plugs into it, since one of the plug spots doesnt even have pins... Just backs up my memories of swapping ECUs.

I have 4 different PNs for 5 speeds here, I need my 99catalog thats in Tokyo to figure it out, but I will keep looking.

OH fruck it, I will go over and take some pics. The garage is still open hehe

Are you saying that after all this, you dont actually have a series-7 (96-98) 13B engine. If you have the one shown in Puma's pics then you in fact have a series-8 (99-02) engine after all.

Now, its getting confusing.

N340 = series-5 (89-91) atmo
N370 = series-5 (89-91) turbo
N390 = JC Cosmo (90-95) 13Btt
NF01 = JC Cosmo (90-95) 20Btt
N3A1 = series-6 (92-95) - Jap spec
N3A3 = series-6 (92-95) - Aussie spec

Unsure of in between

N3F1 = series-7 (96-98)
N3G1 = series-8 (99-02) 280hp
N3G2 = series-8 (99-02) 265hp
N3G3 = series-8 (99-02) 255hp

This is the information I have.

And my ecu is n3f1, I think you got mislead about series stuff.

Well your stuck here in Ok, so theres limited rotary resources at your disposal but you can PM if you need any US parts locally.
otherwise what I would do is use the JDM engine & turbos only, go Non Seq., and block off the (AWS, DT) Use the JDM solenoids and ignition parts as back up items.
