3rd gen semi-newbie here. I'm considering buying this 93 R1 with 43k original for $16,000. Only mod is RB dual tip catback. Car is completely mint, never driven in snow, and only like 3 times in rain on accident plus has no sunroof or bose and has the cloth seats. I suddenly just thought of this now though. I dont know if the R1 had the sunroof as optional or standard. Anyone?

 

The R models did not come with a sunroof, although it appears a few special order cars did get through with this option. One example is pictured in the "Mazda RX-7 Performance Handbook" by Mike Ancas.

 

Yup, an R1/R2 w/ a sunroof is extremely rare, probably less than 5 ever made. The original owner must have waited months to have this custom made from factory. Money talks!

 

Which cloth did it have? The woven kind or the suede-like stuff? It sounds like the car might not be an R1. Look for the red strut tower bar under the hood and the second oil cooler on the passenger side of the car. It can't be an automatic if it is an R model, either.

There is no big reason to avoid the Base or Touring models, but I am sure you want to know what you are getting. Post more details if you have doubts.

Interesting, I thought the R1s came with it optional. This one however does not have the sunroof, it does have the strut bar, I dont think the seats are woven, and I forgot to check about the second oil cooler. One other thing I dont know about is that is doesnt have the bose.

 

R1's or 2's do not have the bose sound system. look for the front and rear spoiler on the car and not a rear wiper. there should also be a second oil cooler and upper strut tower bar. seats should be suede, so you shouldn't be able to slide around when you sit in them.

 

The R1 didn't come with a sunroof. I did a lot of research before I bought mine. I ended up buying the R2. If the seats are suede, and there is a strut bar, then its an R package 7. The other thing is that the R1 doesn't have an oil cooler on the passenger side. They only have 1 on the drivers side, then R2 is the package with two oil coolers. I also believe that only the PP(Persons Preference) came with the sunroof and Bose.

 

Uh, every R1 I have seen including mine has dual oil coolers. The difference between R1's and R2's is the year and the R2 has a softer suspension.
