Summary: Koyo Rad Fitment problems

Ok guys,

Done many searches just wanted to make a summary of all the problems people have had trying to install the Koyo rad into their FD's to try and summerize if it is worth the extra dough to go for the Fluidyne which seems to have less fitment issues but maybe a little less quality from what I gather.

Ohh also little not please write whether you have the N-Flow or Regular Radiator and any other relevant information.

Many thanks, much appreciation and much love,

Alex

P.s Pics are always a plus. I have a 93 Touring FD.

Mine bolted in too. I had to fiddle with the battery a little because things did sit a little higher but it was more or less a simple install. I have the regular Koyo and I can't say enough about the quality of that radiator.

IIRC, the only thing I had to adjust was the mounting brackets and getting the rubber bumpers to sit properly. Oh wait, I lied. I had to adjust my Greddy SMIC to allow my hood to close. Just as "silverTRD" said. It is well worth it at the end.

I had to shim the intercooler duct up so the fans wouldn't clip it when they came on. Other than that I had no problems.

In order to get the ASP large IC duct to fit correctly I modified the upper hangers to hang 1/4" lower and replaced the upper rubber mounts with a bolt and a thinner rubber grommet. No problems other than that, but I also removed my AC condensor at the same time...

So basically there is no reason to go Fluidyne and people with a non-stock air box have had no problems?>

After this answered I am good.

I had the koyo..got so frustrated with the fitment that I sold it for a fluidyne.

Not only could I not close my hood with the stock airbox, but I the radiator also pushed up on my ASP medium intercooler causing rubbing and making it impossible to clamp my hood latch down.

I also read all of the "it's not difficult to install threads" and thought I was ok but what was the biggest worry for me was seeing the thick Koyo resting against the AC cooler. I guess I could have done more fabbing to keep it from resting there but I was tired of fiddling with something that was supposedly a simple "drop in". The last thing I wanted was the contact rubbing a hole in my AC or coolant line.

Ask some people with the koyo in stock config to take some pictures and you will see what I mean.

For me, the piece of mind was easily worth the fluidyne. If you don't mind some DIY then get the Koyo....If you want a "plug and play" I prefer the fluidyne.

Finally, you have to take some of the posts with a grain of salt. Some people who advocated a simple install had singles or aftermarket IC that made the install simpler.

Here is Thread I started on all my problems with fitment. https://www.rx7club.com/3rd-generation-specific-1993-2002-16/my-new-koyo-dont-fit-crap-469207/

I would have gladly paid extra for a mazdaspeed for perfect fitment.

Thanks for the thread, Dradon. It got me leaning towards the Fluidyne over the Koyo as well.

I've not seen the Mazdaspeed radiators for sale on the common vendor websites. Where can you purchase that radiator from?

radiator alternative?

I have had the same fitment issues. You may want to consider a new airbox. Rick at Ricks Rotary in Pleasanton CA makes a box that is a half an inch shorter which takes care of the clearance isuue. His work is impeccable.

does Rick make the RX7fashion airbox??

I LOVE that box! Sits low well built. HOWEVER, the radiator inlet for the koyo sits so high that it rubs against the bottom of the box. I had to bang a dent in the bottom to get the freaking koyo to clear.

This was an issue as I also smelled a little coolant but could never find the source. After I lost my last engine, on the tear down, we saw that the airbox rubbed against the top radiator hose causing a small pinpoint leak.

Check out AWR, according to their website they make the MazdaSpeed Racing radiators. Here's the link, http://www.awrracing.com/pages/cooling.html. BTW - I bought one for my FD and the fitment and build quality is excellent (although not cheap in terms of $$$).

7 racer Rick does make that box. I have not heard any problems about the fitment however, I will call him to check.

Sometimes the Fluidyne can have fitting problems as well. If you get stumped search my forum name and "fluidyne install" and you will see how i and a few others got their radiators to fit in right.
