Stripping Powdercoat?

Might be the wrong section, but I know there are a few folks "in the know" here..

I have a set of wheels that need to be stripped, and re-coated. They are 3 piece, and the center has been removed. What method do I use?

Stripper?

Sandblasting?

Sandpaper?

Any help is greatly appreciated!

cant you just use a heat gun/propane torch to get it past 450 degrees? it should turn back in to a fluid and you should beable to just wipe it off right? i have never powdercoat anything but it seems like that would work from what i have read.

Not sure. I've never worked with it before. Hopefully someone can clear that up. Thanks!

Doing a quick search on the internet, blasting doens't work well removing powder coatings (it's slow and beats the crap out of the surface).

Chemical strippers are what everyone recommends. I saw one person used Acetone (fingernail polish remover) with success.

Methyl Ethyl Ketone

Some nasty stuff. Most people recommend using something, less toxic to your health.

MEK will eat anything I've used it on aircraft parts as it is the only thing that would strip the oxide primer off aluminum. If you inhale any of it you'll swear your brain is melting. Use this stuff with proper protection!

yeah, Methyl Ethly Ketone.

sorry about that. My buddy uses it to strip parts before he powdercoats them. use it outside, with a mask, with some thick rubber gloves.

Thanks for the help guys. I'm going to give the aircraft stripper a try first. If it doesn't work, I'll go to the MEK. Hopefully my Top Secret clearance will allow me to buy it without questions of government safety!
