Stock Twins question

Hi everyone, today I removed my stock twins to get a hole drilled out (long story), anyways I am wondering if there is anything I should do before putting them back on? I am replacing all of the gaskets/nuts/bolts that the shop manual say to, but is there anything else that I should do (cleaning, etc...?) any reccomendations would be great! Thanks guys.

Do you get boost creep? If so, consider enlarging the wastegate hole. If that doesn't make sense, search for "boost creep" -- this topic has been discussed a lot.

Go non-sequential and port the wastegate.

Check all the OEM vacuum hoses (WG, PTC, TC, CCV, CRV, etc,..etc..) for brittleness. Replace all the ones you can with silicone type. If you decide to replace the WG/PTC hoses, REMEMBER to re-install the boost pills in their respective hose.

Pull the exhaust manifold and turbo heat shield and have them 2k heat coated. Replace the two turbo water hoses.

Inspect/replace the gaskets. Don't go non-sequential. Did you have a good boost pattern before you pulled them?

I'm doing the same thing next weekend. I ordered new turbo to manifold gaskets, new turbo to manifold studs and nuts, new downpipe gasket, new downpipe studs and nuts, new gaskets for the oil drain lines and new turbo coolant lines.

If you removed the banjo bolts to the oil feeds you'll want to replace them. They can twist and break if you try to reuse them.

Why would the banjo bolts on the oil feed break unless you're doing something stupid with them? The banjo bolts are like the ones on the caliper.

I reused them last year and had never heard of anyone saying this is a mandatory replacement item.

The banjo bolts for the oil feed at the turbos themselves are weak because they have thin walls with four holes through them. If you look closely at the banjo bolts after removal you'll see that the holes are not round but a twisted elliptical shape. When new they are round, when you install and torque them the bolt twists around the weak area where the holes are. Reusing it is not a good idea.

The banjo bolts for the water coolant lines and for the oil feed at the front cover are much stronger and can be reused, though it never hurts to replace them if in doubt. The brake caliper banjos aren't as weak either.

FYI - Ray at Malloy sells a whole "rebuild" gasket kit which includes the block to manifold gasket, DP gasket, LIM gasket, UIM gasket and I maybe another gasket or two for $120.

^^ Thanks but I get all my stuff through Mazda Motorsports.

The two turbo to exhaust manifold gaskets are $62 all by themselves; I think the downpipe gasket was $20 or so. I bought everything in my list above for $150.

DamonB is right. I had one of my oil banjo bolts break when I removed my turbos and ported the wastegate. I had a couple of spares around so I used one of them. If they aren't to expensive I would heed is reccomendation and get some new ones. Of course, if you do not have to take the turbo assembly apart then you really do not need to remove the oil line. Good luck!

I remember twisting one off at the time of the assembly after the Turbo rebuild. I had to order it from the dealer and the price was around $15.00 for the Bolt. The brass gasket is sold seperately.

Gotta love that Mazda Motorsports discount. I bought the same list but had to add two engine to exhaust manifold gaskets. Those were about $50 each. Ouch!

Yeah, those metal gaskets are killers! I replaced the manifold to motor gaskets when I put the new motor in but since the manifold isn't coming off this time there's a hundred bucks I can save!

Thanks for all of the advice, I will consider porting the wastegate, but I really have no idea about how to do that, so I will do some searching on the topic. I am replacing all of the gaskets, bolts, etc... and the boost pattern was fine before I took the turbos off.
