stock restrictor pills, actual appearance
stock restrictor pills, actual appearance
Hi guys,
I haven't seen any posts with pictures of what the correct ones look like.
The shop that did the rebuild on my car gave me the pills to put in my lines and I just got around to doing this this weekend.
The holes themselves look like a pinhole. While the pills are the exact same size, one does appear slightly larger.
I just wanted to verify that .062" is the diameter of a pinhole before I put it on the car. It just looks wrong, I can barely see any light through there!

Stock Wastegate Pill is about .062"
Stock Turbo Pre-Control is about .058"
Stock Wastegate Pill is about .062"
Stock Turbo Pre-Control is about .058"
The only way I could tell the difference is I had a really fine tapered round file. When I inserted it into the pill it went slightly further into the one with the larger bore.
It won't be a big deal if you mix them up.

Since the two correct pills have holes that are ~0.062 (wastegate) and 0.058" (precontrol) diameter (about 1/16"), they are, IMO, much bigger than a "pinhole." I think of a pinhole as 1/32" diameter or less. Do you have a drill-bit set? If you do, compare them to the 1/16" drill bit for reference. Also make sure that the pill holes are not obstructed in some way.
I don't think I have any restrictor pills in mine. I didn't even know what they were when I replaced those vacuum hoses a while ago, so I may have thrown them away along with the old hoses. So let me get this right, there are only 2 restrictor pills in ALL the vacuum hoses and those are the turbo precontrol and the wastegate pills correct?
The pill is im believing to be a small diameter plastic piece that fits snuggly inside of these two hoses, and it has an even smaller diamter hole in the middle, which helps to maintain secondary boost?
How would I go about buying them, could they be ordered from Ray at Mazda

Yep, Ray can get the pills for you.
And, yes, those are the only restrictor pills in the whole system. If you have the later (like '95) turbos, they have the pills built into the nipples coming off the compressor housing.
With no pills and the stock boost control system, you'll only run 7psi of boost.
Another (better) option - put that money towards an electronic boost controller. The factory boost control system is ONLY good on a STOCK car. As soon as you start modifying the car, you have problems. An electronic boost controller does away with the pills and the wastegate/precontrol solenoids all together.

. . .and if you have a PFC, don't don't don't (did I say don't?) ever put new pills in without turning the boost way down to to test everything out. Then work the boost up to where you want it. This can be a $5 - $10k "oops" (don't ask how I know). As Dale said, get an EBC.
wow this thread is back.
I put those pills in right before I took the car in to get tuned.
So... after installing these puppies I took the car up to Neptune Speed for Yoshia to tune. I was really busy with work so I could not watch them tune
The car was boosting 15lbs on those pills pictured above. The tuning session was put on hold until I forked out a boost controller and then resumed a couple days later. tsk tsk
I didn't buy the pills I got them from someone else and they did come in a Mazda parts little baggy. I would recommend buying them in the hoses already though.

That looks like a Holley carb jet.
Carb jets make for a good substitute.
However, I've messed around with replacing and swapping pills. It's a pain and not very effective. IMHO, if you're going to mess with these you should just buck up and buy a set of adjustable manual boost controllers. They do a much better job and don't cost much money.
