Stock realiability

I am kinda new to this forum, i have been in club rsx alot since i own an rsx-s. I have been searching alot in this forum and have found tons of good info, but i have not seen many about stock fd's. I was wonedering, as long as you take care of the car, oil changes, remove as much heat as possible , check all the hoes , how long frequently will you have to rebuild the engine running pretty much stock except mabey and down pipe and exhaust? and how much would it cost? i have not seen many posts on this when i searched. any info would be greatly appreciated. thanks

rx7store has a mazda reman FD engine for $2,299.00....there's alot of different options to go with. I'm sure that isn't the cheapest either.

a stock FD (downpipe+fanmod) treated properly (oil changes, warm up periods, cool down periods, proper fuel) could last as long as 100K miles.

BUT- can you keep the car stock?

given you find an rx7 in great condition to start with, and do the basics it should last awhile. I personally only keep a car a year or two.

I just need the car to be reliable to commute 100 miles every now and then from school, and i figured that keeping it stock would eliminate some of the over heating and detiontion problems it may have. or at least running it at safe boost level

Stick with the RSX until you are able to own both.

vashuba311,

The engine is not the only thing that can go wrong. If you read through this forum, many people are sorting out problems with their cars and rarely if any of them are "engine" problems. The components around the engine are typically where people spend most of their time troubleshooting.

Keep in mind that these cars are over 10 years old. Unless you find one that someone has completely overhauled, there are bound to be things that are going to break or fail just from wear/tear/age.

IMO, if you want something that's a rotary, reliable, and over 200hp, save up and get an RX-8. It's NA, almost the same power as a stock FD, darn fine interior, and will have a warranty.

You don't really want to use it as a dedicated commuter car unless you know for sure the car is running at its best and you keep it that way, which basically means keeping it relitively stock and doing all of the reliabilty/maintanence mods. Upgrade the radiator, all hoses, AST, check for leaks, etc. For detonation just make sure to have a few gas stations you've had experience with and fill premium only.

I got up one day to drive it to the college and five minutes into the drive I saw clouds of smoke from under the hood. Pulled over, turned out to be a punctured lower radiator hose that was squirting collant over the belts. Drove it home very slowly and it sat in the garage for a few days until the hose came in the mail. Of course that could happen to any car but parts would be easier to get a hold of.

Plus, depending where you go to school, there will be aholes that will key or dent your car costing you money and time to fix. Depends on your situation I guess. I'd stick with diablone's advice and keep the RSX until you can afford to own both or at least get a beater for those rainy days.

Let me know first when you are ready to sell it, since SexyRx already has two. Some people just have to try to take all the good deals, I swear

That depends on how long you own the FD.
