stock or not

hey guys, I am looking at a project car that is fairly hacked up interior wise but is mechanically very sound (i drove it around some). The guy I'm buying it from had bought it intending to fix it but never got around to it. He says the only aftermarket part on the car that he is aware of is an HKS exhaust system. I was looking around and the car has falken tires and Tein coilovers, are these really stock. I also noticed that it says "efini" under the rx-7 emblam on the rear bumper, could it be that this is some special edition that came with the tires and shocks. Also, how big are the stock front rotors, the ones on this thing must be 11 or 12 inches in diameter though the calipers do say mazda on them.

thanks again, sorry if this is retarded newbie questions

the brakes are probably just new or stock rotors because those sound like the stock callipers. the Teins and the falkens are aftermarket. the efini badge just means that he bought a new sticker (like an integra type-R kinda crap). buy the car and sell me the Teins for $50

just make sure you know what you are getting into there man and read all the info in the newbie sticky please, if you haven't already, its full of really good things to know.

thanks for the info, any idea on how much this stuff is worth? I was going to sell it after I finished fixing it but if it has some quality mods, maybe I'll keep it.

depending on what type of Tein Coilovers they are the cheapest ones start at like $850 for a set but the more common ones, the Tein Flex coilovers run around $1350 with the pillowmounts brand new. cheack the for sale section of the forum and figure out what the going rate for used ones is. that's pretty much the only thing you described which anyone would be interested in buying used other than the cat-back.

I would be very careful. It sounds like you really aren't familiar with FDs and the interior pieces are very, very expensive to replace. You might want to consider a better maintained car.

I second that. If you don't know much about a FD, I highly suggest you read up on its maintanence required and knowledge.

ALSO, Tein coilovers? and Falken tires? Hell no thats not stock. Tein is a very expensive aftermarket suspension upgrade. And you know damn well thoes tires arent stock. He says he's aware of a HKS exhaust system... is there a downpipe as well as midpipe? That is very very very "not stock". The Rx7 with efini sticker is not stock either. Stock Rx7's have Rx7 MAZDA. Please check this guy's car out more in depth before you end up with something you regret.

Jeremy

Best thing to do is take some pics and post it on the forum..
Pics give a lot more info than what you think.

thanks for the info guys, keep it comming. Yeah, I don't know alot about FDs but I do have a decent deal of experiance with higher performance cars. I'm familiar with the wankel even though I have not owned one (did some reaserch on them in college). I have priced out the interior and with the amount this thing is going for, I think I can restore it for under 8000.

if the car drives well and he only wants $4k, give him $3750, take the thing home, don't title it... just part it out. i think you would be able to make a decent amount off it it... hell, those coilovers could probably fetch you $700 just by themselves. then take the money you've spent and the knowledge you gained disassmbling it and put it all towards another project car that's not quite as daunting

again, its just what i'd do in your situation. by no means am i trying to tell you what to do, i'm just saying, its worth a thought. good luck in whatever you end up deciding to do.

that does sound like a good idea, I am considering it. I do enjoy rebuilding cars so half of it is the fun of working on the FD. I think I will get it either way.

You can get a nice example of a running fd for $12k and not have all the restore issues. A guy around the corner from me just bought a cherry stock 94 for $10k with 65k on the odo. I got mine for $12500.

4k is an awsome price for any good shell. I would definitely buy it no matter what... Part it or fix it.. If you are going to keep it.. think of couple of things ( know you're not a newbie in this)... If you are going to keep it, make sure you have some sort of goal in mind.. Make sure if fixing it to that point will be within your budget. My second FD, I bought it because in order for me to fix up some junk FD, it would of been cheaper to just buy one already built. New paint, engine, turbos, and over all good shape.. And I knew that thru experience in building my first FD..

Good luck on your project!
