Stock Air Box Clips- Quick Question

I recently purchased a 93 tourting edition. It is completely stock and the airbox clips are broken, so the top and bottom halves of the box are actually zip tied together. No big, deal, but it looks ghetto. Is it a common problem for these to break? Also, is there somewhere cheap I can get these or an upgrade or am I pretty much limited to a dealership for replacement. Thanks for your help.

very common for them to break.

everytime i try getting another one, the clips wind up being broken or I bust one accidentally trying to install it.

I think it will be alright if the zip ties sealing it tightly with no gaps.

The stock air box sucks. I would give you mine but the clips are also broken. Just replace the giant black box with a nice "smaller" aftermarket intake. The zip ties are ok but just a temporary fix. The dealer will rape you on parts.

Thats kind of what I figured. I think I may look into a cheap aftermarket option then. Thanks for your help. I have had then lost or broken on other vehicles in the past and figured it is common, just wanted to make sure it wasnt a particularly easy fix before I look into other replacement options. Thanks for your time guys.

Actually, the stock airbox is a nice unit. It is rugged, quiet, and (surprise) can be modified to work BETTER than the aftermarket cold air intakes. You can buy a used box on the 3rd gen parts forum for around $30. Maybe even one without broken clips

To modify it, check out this thread: https://www.rx7club.com/forum/showth...hreadid=121491

I figured you might chime in AdamC. I have been a lurker for about a few weeks here and you always jump in when someone mentions intakes. I actually am/was considering doing something similar to your intake with my stock box. Only problem is obviously the clips and the I am going to upgrade my intercooler, so dependent upon whether or not the stock airbox will fit with whichever intercooler I may keep it. Thanks for your input.

Hank,

Dang, I didn't surprise you!! There are a few small intercoolers that will work with the stock airbox and battery. Mazdaspeed, Blitz, Greddy. Some of the medium sized ones will work with the stock air box, and relocated, or smaller, battery. I chose the Blitz for fitment. I know it isn't the biggest, or best, but it was the right choice for me because I wanted to keep my engine bay looking stock for smog inspections here in Ca. It was a good improvement over stock.

Adam

Right on. Thanks again. What blitz IC did you go with. I would prefer to keep everything fairly stock looking for the same reason. I think I will most likely keep the stock airbox and mod it for cold air.

The Blitz stock mount intercooler. A new one will run around $825-850 if you shop around.
