stereo question. explain it to me like a 3 yr old

ok. here is what i want to do. i want to trash the bose in the back and the bose door speakers i am buying some 5.25 for the doors. i want to use a regular adaptor from wal-mart or radio shack i have a alpine head unit to replace the bose factory. now to the simple question that I NEED ANSWERED. the wires that go from the head unit on the bose to the amps in the door for input. can i take the amp out use those wires and run those wires from the speakers to the head unit or do i have to run new wires? running new wires looks like its gonna be hard because of lack of room. dont want to take the doors off? i know this should be in the interior section but noone is looking at that section and u guys always seem to have the answers

run new wires save more trouble....just buy some 16 gauge wire...cut it to pretty long length to give yourself extra room, pop off the door panels replace the speakers and run the wires through the hole in the door where the wiring harness for the door runs through the rubber tunnel into your car...then just run the wires over the steering column and up behind the headunit...do the same on the passenger side no biggy

It is a pain to run all new wire if you want to make it look neat. because the wiring harness form the body to the door is wrap in side this seal wiring loom. It will be easier if you just tap into the existing wire to the factory amp. What I did was I remove the seal box out of the door, and take the amp and speaker out of it. There should be four wires going to the amp. Use the thicker two out of the four wires to run your new speakers, and tap into the wiring harness inside the body by the door. (look for the matching color wire and test it out to make sure you got the right two).
BTW, if you going to reuse the factory box, the 5 1/4 in speaker might be too big, I had to use 4" speakers. good luck.

I just did this and I can tell you, it's not that easy. The wiring for all of the door electrics goes through a molex plug, not just a "rubber tunnel" I tired everything to utilize this plug for my wiring, but no luck. I ended up drilling new holes in the door jams for routing the new speaker wires. If you remove the kick panels you can go through from the inside easily enough, you just need a slightly longer bit than normal. On the drivers side yu will have to remove the relay for the lights and on the passenger side you'll need to unbolt and move the ecu out of the way. I didn't even unplug the ecu, no sense in risking damage to the ecu. Make the hole large enough to put in a rubber grommet to prevent damaging the wire. Once you get the wire through the jam you can just punch a small hole in the "rubber tunnel" that goes between the door jam and the door itself and run the wire through that. Also, after you have the wire completely run to the door speakers, put some black sealant around the wire right at the rubber grommet, to keep water out.

As for the speakers, if you get 5 1/4" speakers, they should bolt right up to the "enclosure" for the Bose drivers. If not, get some 1/4" mdf and make an adapter to mount either to the door or to the "enclosure". If you mount right to the door you may have to pay attention to the speaker depth to avoid interferring with the windows. I put 6 1/2" Focals in place of my stock speakers, using the stock mounts with an mdf adapter, and didn't have a problem, but I didn't have the Bose system. I did have to use a Dremel tool to do a little cutting on the original mount. I put 5 1/4" Focals in the rear and a 10" Solobaric in the cargo area. I'm running 800w to the sub and 75w/chan to the Focals. Next I'll be figuring out what to do with the center channel speaker (my deck is 5.1 surround) and custom mounting the head unit, which has a 6.5" video screen.

Did he do it without removing the door? I'd be interested in knowing how.

Thumbs up

I didn't like the idea of using the thin factory wiring so I ran 14 gage wire through the factory connector by drilling out a hole where there were no wires. I completely removed the Bose (it's weak) and replaced it with Infinity speaker (5 1/4 in the front doors, 6 X 9 in the rear and a second pair of 6 X 9 in the hatch. I'm running two JL Audio amps, a 300 watt (RMS) 4 channel driving the speakers and a 250 watt JL amp driving a custom sub built by your truly using a 8W7. I installed a DVD plaver in the dash so I can play music recorded on DVD. I have a video screen but haven't installed it yet. All this to say, don't be afraid to get your hands dirty because if you plan the job properly you can have a kickass system.

By the way I installed the 5 1?4 in the door by modifying the plastice grills in the door panel and zip tieing the speakers to the grill. I was easy to modify the grills using a Moto tool and a steady hand. I used this as a guide.
