Starter wiring question

Hi all,

Replacing my starter today and realized the starter wiring from the replacement is opposite of what came off the car. Is the replacement incorrect?

I don't think it makes to much difference what side it's on as it's just a coil u should be able to switch it over
I've never done this but would try it and if it goes bang it wasn't me lol

It's just a solenoid. Like a big relay. Apply the 'low' signal and it connects the two 'high' poles. They are not specific in which needs to go where.

Hey, Makes a BIG difference... +12volts (from Battery) and +12volts (from ignition switch) cannot be on same pole. So, check continuity (male-spade connector to each large stud). The large starter wire will be connected to the large-stud that DOES have continuity with the small male-spade connector. Battery +12v cable connects to the other stud.

This is a good point if the signal is just grounding the circuit. If it has battery power, then a short in that wire could cause the starter to engage with the key off. Or am I missing something?

When you turn ignition switch to "start" +12v goes directly to ground (starter housing) via solenoid coil resistance. Then, solenoid/relay closes & battery cable +12 is connected to starter motor.

Refer to: Wiring Manual (Starting System Wiring Diagram sect A-1), nice drawing of complete circuit.
