Can you explain the polishing method? What materials are used and how to do the process. I might be tackling the UIM in the future.

oh yeah, how the heck do you get into the nook and crannies? this was done with a dremel and my tired hands. is there a better power sander out there. has anyone used the dremel countour sander? tia kvn

 

it was a rough polish. started with 100,220, and 320. I ain't no expert. i forgot to get finer sand paper. when i did my motorcycle frame i used up to 1500 super duper fine sand paper to remove the little scratches. it was much easier to polish b/c it was flat. lol..... the uim i think i am afraid to do b/c it looks hard to get in the little corners. i will try to hit it with some 1500 grit and see if it turns out better.

 

Garfinkles son polishes ,it takes him over 15 hours to do a uim . They have several machines ,the big one is 5 hp and the shaft is 1.25 in in dia, 36 inches long with a wheel on each end .People using the harber fright 8 in buffer are in for a lot of work . Remember if you are doing your own you will be proud in the end . Wear eye protection and a mask over your noise and mouth

 

Damn, 15 hours?! All that work just for the *bling*? What does a job like that cost?

here is my uim i did it my self. i used lots of sand paper and a dermel thing. then i got some polishing rough(dont know how to spell it) for a shop and put it on a buffing wheel. as soon as this stuff touched it it got shinny. then i had to get the super shine done at the shop because my bench grinder didn't spin fast enough they used a big one. i for get how mcuh i had to pay to jsut get it the lil bit better the what i had it at.

BTW, of the 1,910 posts you've made on this forum so far, you've mentioned "Garfinkle" in 612 of them, and "Garfinkles" or "Garfinkle's" in 57 more. Do you know what talking about Garfinkle in the third person in a third of your posts is? It's ******* annoying. Especially when you're butchering the English language while doing it.

And while we're on the subject of polishing, no professional polisher would take 15 hours to do an UIM. I had most of my suspension and my door sill plates polished in under eight hours by a competent polisher. It would probably take him two hours to do an UIM, three at most.

Just curious...how long will that shine last once it's installed in the engine compartment? How do you maintain it?

Ive been on my UIM and Throttle Body for about 5 hours already and it looks 100% better but your are gets tired quick. I used 100 200 then at 320 used a sanding disk and wheel and got in. Also used a dremmel for corners. Now Im at 420 wet sanding taking out scuffs from the sanding disk. So far so good. Time Consuming but worth it.

Im happy with how it turned out (my first polishing job) although it needs about 2 more hours of fine polishing to get the shine of the pros, but again Im always much happier to say I did it myself.

 

Ok, the person referring to Garfinkle is his wife I believe. The person that does the polishing is Garfinkles son. At least that is what I get from all this Garfinkle Madness

 

What I found that worked great for initial work on the UIM was one of these. It's abbrasive enough to take off a lot of material but will wear itself down to the countours of the UIMs fingers. I used it in a cordless drill.

The rest of the nooks and crannies are a total bitch.. Cone sanders and time.

One note. You should have removed the little square of aluminum on the top of the TB before you started polishing... There's casting notches all over the place that I'm really suprised people don't remove before they polish.. (the bend at the secondsary runners on the UIM for instance..) It makes polishing easier if you just grind them down first and get them out of the way.

Jim, I like most of the imput you have on this forum and think you are very able and knowledgable of RX-7s and other vehicles. Sometimes i feel that you can be a complete ******* with some of your comments. I have noticed this through a lot of threads. Do you think you could be a little nicer to people. This is in no way a flame, its more of a suggestion.

Probably not, but there was no harm in asking.

There's a little history here. I questioned "Garfinkle" disassembling the stock BOVs to replace the springs in another thread. After getting an explanation from duboisr, I attempted to close the issue by stating that it was not something most people would do, hence my initial doubt. I got a smartass comment from duboisr in return, who apparently didn't feel the issue was closed and had apparently taken offense that I even questioned it. Fine, from that point on, anything is fair game.

The 15 hour figure is bullshit, and I'm sick and tired of reading posts by someone constantly talking about someone else in the third person. It's like YZF-R1 constantly quoting pages from the ICR web site to justify his religious opinions on evolution. It gets old after awhile.

Personally, I don't give a **** if anyone thinks I'm being an ******* about it. I am, I know it, and I really don't care...
