standalone ems for 3rd gen
standalone ems for 3rd gen
hey guys, i know that wolf has the v500 as a standalone ems for the 3rd gen 13btt, but are there any other options out there?
does anyone have any opinion on the wolf v500 unit after using it?
its pretty pricey, and i want to make sure that i wont run into any issues with using it on my stock jdm '95 rx7 motor. i need a stand alone ems, as i'm putting this motor in my vw-based kelmark kit car, and am going to be using a beefed-up vw transmission. i'm not a tuning guru and have no prior experience in such, so i'm hoping that downloading of one of the supplied maps will get me up and running.
any other advice regarding this is surely welcome.

PFC is the way to go, especially if your going to be attempting to tune it yourself.
You should also buy Chucks notes here on the forum and that should get you going.

i'd go with one of the new haltech series standalones, they have an ungodly amount of loggable inputs which is imperative for "perfect" tunes....
but at the same time it's all about your tuner and what they are comfortable wtih

From what I know, the AEM EMS sold by www.aempower.com is not related to the Wolf3D EMS sold by www.wolfems.com . The software and hardware look different, although it's interesting that both companies are using the same name 'Advanced Engine Management.'
I have an AEM EMS in my RX-7, like the Apex'i PFC it plugs directly into the stock 93-95 wiring harness (same connector as the stock ECU is built into the box). From what I gather the Wolf3D uses an adapter harness between the ECU and the stock wiring harness.

The PFC is not a good fit for this application, as you may have the emmisions harness but you are lacking the driver's side engine harness and all the electronics. When doing a custom installation into a non-rx7 body you are much better off using an EMS that has it's own flying lead. You really need a system that has internal igniters for the ignition. Look at the Haltech as you stated you would like to be able to download a map to get you started, Microtech does not have the option of saving and loading maps (huge drawback).
On a side note you will want to verify that the J-spec engine you have is in good condition before doing this install, nothing worse then doing all this work just to find out that you have installed a blown engine.

I've had all the above ECU's. 90% of the aboved mentioned ECU'ed are really limited.
I dont care who made how much power on what ECU - that doesn't prove its worth a flip. I have two ecu's currently of which one is AEM.
Out of the Wolf, Microtec, PowerFC (yuck) & AEM... the AEM is the ONLY ecu I would ever buy again for my FD. Until you understand the basics of how engine tuners do their jobs, it might be hard to pick an ECU.
Buy an AEM and I promise you wont regret it.
There are soo many options you can (and should) configure.
- PowerFC doesn't give you an idle map and needs a DL box(how cute).
- Software for Microtec is awful
- Wolf had promise with their V500 ECU but the software remains 90% the same as v4.7
I'd pick the Wolf over the other ECU's (if not aem) because it really *does* have advanced hardware (very fast cpu and memory), advanced reluctor (ignition) hardware. the software isn't ..bad (better than fc-edit and microtec).
all in all, i'd pick the AEM over it. if you are one of those guys who needs to see bigger hp cars on an ECU before you buy it, look at ErnieT, Ray suggested he go AEM and Ray tuned it.
anyhow dont pick the powerfc, its just.. awful. yeah it'll work but its still an outdated & slow ecu with a cute dl-box.
