Speed Bleeder for the FD Clutch - The Buck Stops Here

Searching for the correct size speed bleeder for the FD clutch, I found a lot of threads, but I believe no answers to the question:

"Which size speed bleeder fits the FD clutch slave cylinder?"

The Answer:

The thread is 8mm x 1mm.

Part numbers:

Russel Performance # 639550
Russel Performance Speed Bleeder Chart

Speed Bleeder Brand # SB8100
Speed Bleeder Brand Size Chart

The attached pic is of one of the preceding installed in my FD, though I forget just which brand I used, though I think it was a Speed Bleeder brand, as a I have a box of SB8100 with one bleeder missing.

It may appear that the slave cylinder is wet with brake fluid, but it is not.
I thought it looked wet, but that is probably just leakage that has dried from a clutch job a couple years ago.

As you can see the longer the bleeder in this case, the better, as it is recessed a bit. The Speed Bleeder brand has a 1.5 mm advantage in this case.

Good stuff! I really should have gotten a speed bleeder for my clutch hydraulics, I just put new stuff in and had a bitch of a time bleeding it.

I have them on my brakes and they work great.

Glad you figured this out for posterity!

I suppose. Those are the kind of links I hate to find in posts, because they usually go invalid after awhile.

Russel 639550 at Summit Racing

Since you get two, you can send the other one to Flying Solo

BTW, you can get the Russell speed bleeders from Amazon as well -

Russell 639550 Import Speed Bleeder : Amazon.com : Automotive Russell 639550 Import Speed Bleeder : Amazon.com : Automotive

It's the same price with shipping as from Summit, about $14 and change.

I want one now for my slave, but I JUST finished a pain in the *** bleeding of my new slave and master and have no desire to monkey with it since it's working fine now .

The (presumably factory) bleed screw that came out of my 1994 slave cylinder had a flat base, not the cone shaped base that the caliper bleed screws have. How do I know this? I tried to install a standard SB8100 and it wouldn't seal! Ended up ruining the end of the SpeedBleeder!

Mine looked like the top one in this photo:

Do then the speed bleaders not work/seal correctly then? Or has this been only for ^ ?

I figured I would update this thread with some new information. I have found that there are aftermarket slaves that use the 7mm fitting 639570

For people with the OEM slaves with the flat end, there is a small metal ball in the hole that needs to be removed prior to installing the speed bleeder.

OEM vs Centric bleeder

Nice! Good that it works just removing that ball.

Should have got both I guess, bought all the ones for the brakes since I was doing the abs delete and tried the 639550, but was too big. Guess I'll order the 639570 one.

639550 fits in the front whereas the 570 was for the rear...

Sorry to bring this back from the dead.

About to change my OEM FD slave bleeder to the 639550 bleeders.

So after i remove the OEM bleeder screw, there will be a ball inside the slave cylinder i have to remove to install the speed bleeder?

hey, don't be sorry for resurrecting old posts if the information is relevant, which it is.

The whole 'necropost' criticism is rather stupid as far as I can see.

Keep relevant information in one easy to find location.

Yes that's correct. Should be easy to get that ball bearing out. It may even come out when you don't expect it to.

As a long-time user of Speedbleeders (the actual brand name ones), my advice is plump for the stainless ones over the standard brass. They last better.

Aww I just ordered the brass ones... I guess for next time, I'll upgrade to Stainless. Thank you for the input!

I'll post a step by step for the clutch since I had questions.

Except if they are going into aluminum, then you do NOT want stainless, for reasons of galvanic corrosion.
