Soo, i pulled my engine/trans

Well the other day my secondary turbo went and my 5th gear synchro went and froze up reverse with it. So yesterday from like 2 till 8 i spent pulling my motor and trans. Figure, by the time i get it fixed the snow will be here so i might as well pull the motor too and clean everything up over winter as opposed to just pulling the turbos and trans.

Well i got it out fine. The secondary turbo is pretty fucked. The edges of the fins are bent/melted in. The sides by the impeller are all scuffed up. While taking the dp off i stripped one of the Allen wrench bolts, i managed to get it out so now i just need to buy a new bolt. I did break off one of the turbo mounting bolts in the manifold so im hoping a drill and an easy out will do the trick. Any advice on that part would be nice.

I contacted aspec tuning who did a rebuild on the turbos not even a year ago and they said they would be under warranty if they didnt fail because of lack of oil or coolant and nothing from the motor went through them. So im hoping its covered, i gotta send them in soon.

I decided im going to do the 5th gear synchro myself. Nearest trans shop quoted between 800-1400 so thats out. My dad has a little experience with transmission and my uncle used to run a trans shop and between that and the faq article on it im sure itl be a breeze.

So while the motors out i decided im going to clean and paint the engine bay. Im using a high temp flat black. Im just doing portions at a time. Pull off a bunch of stuff, tape it, clean it, scotch brite it, clean it, paint it. It seems to be going pretty good and i think itl look a lot nicer than the dirty, faded red. And black goes with any color so when the car is repainted in the future itl still be fine. Also going to clean the engine up, find my power steering leak, remove my ac pump, find the oil leak by my OMP and basically just clean it all and make it pretty again.

Heres some pics. I dont have a digi cam, this is cell phone pics but you get the idea.

Looks like you got a nice winter project! The photo of your exhaust manifold looked a little fuzzy, but it didn't seem to have too many cracks (?). Good luck with that, must be nice to have the space and tools for this.

Actaully that manifold might be fucked. The crack goes all the way through. It ran fine like that, but if anyone knows, whats the negative effects of putting it back on if its cracked through like it is. ill try to get real pics soon

is this the easiest way to pull the tranny or did you pull the motor to work on other things too? (in case i have tranny problems in the future )

i pulled the motor and tranny at once because i had to get the turbos as well. And in my head, the work to pull the tranny + the work to pull the turbos > the work to pull the motor and trans at once. If your just doing trans work then just take the trans, but if you have more to do it might be easier. I also wanted to clean the engine bay up and its almost winter so i was about done driving the car anyways. So i figured what the hell, ill just pull it all that way i can work on it easier.

Got a few more accents to make around the engine bay. A few more spots to paint yet, but its comming along nicely. Gotta get it done before the transmission parts come in though. Probably going to finish today.

What paint are you using? Have you considered using some sound deadening material like QuietCoat spray on material? I also read about second skin (secondskinaudio.com) has several products you can spray on helps lower radiant heat and sound into the cabin.. I'm just curious since you got everything out of the engine bay. Looks like fun

Im just using a generic high temp paint, nothing special. Wish i had looked at that second skin before hand though.

Got my snychro and spindle from ray today, amazingly fast.
