Someone please school me... weight of the FD
Yeah trivial question. We all know the FD's weight is around 27XX lbs. But due to a conversation that I had on another area here on the forum, the topic was brought up about the weight listed on the door.
GVWR = 3210 LBS ??? what is that weight? anyone know? Sadly I should know this but this is the first time I ever looked at that sticker
Thanks

GVWR is NOT the actual weight of the car. I have always heard the FD was around 2850 with 1/2 tank of gas, no driver.

oohhh thanks!
yeah there is a reason why I said 27XX lbs. I've seen several places state different weight. 2850 is the highest I've seen yet

GVWR = Gross Vehicle Weight Rating
This is the maximum the vehicle should ever weigh. in other words, if your cargo and fluids and passenger and driver make the curb weight of the FD exceed the GVWR, then you are "over grossing" the car. lighten the load and then go for your drive. The gross weight is determined by the designers to ensure safe handling and BRAKING characteristics. if the car is over-grossed, you will most likely e stressing stock parts. However, I have yet to see any documented cases of an FD carrying 60 lbs of stuff in the trunk area and two people weighing in over 200 lbs apiece ever having a brake failure. This would technically "overgross" the car, but I have a feeling they designed the FD a bit stronger then stated on the GVWR.
Just like semis, they have the gvwr pasted all over them, to let inspectors know what the maximum hauling capacity (including the trucks weight) would be. I wonder if the GVWR is involved with tax purposes somewhere in the importing business. I know that 1/2 ton trucks with a gvwr ov at least 6500lbs will get farmers and business owners a tax writeoff in WA state.
for a small car like this, I dont see there being a problem. Funny story though: I was moving to Colorado and I owned a 2003 Hyundai Tiburon at the time. I had all of my tools in the car and all of my belongings.... it was LOADED! when I weighed the car, it was 250lbs over gross before I got back into it. most of the way through the 1100 mile trip, i blew my rear shocks. But I guess that is bound to happen when you overgross a small car by 520 lbs total.

In driving trim (ie you driving with a full tank of gas) in an FD, I would guess the average total weight around 3000lbs. assuming a driver 150-200 lbs.
Most 2 seater cars driving around are sitting around midpoint between curb weight and gvwr. a 4 seater vehicle will have a considerably higher payload (unless it is a metro) so a single occupant driving a 4 seater car will be around 25-30% of payload capacity above curbweight (so 70-75% of payload less then gvwr).
these numbers will change when you start talking about small suv's, large SUVs, crew cab trucks compared to standard cab trucks, etc...

Well yeah I was the guy that brout up the fact that my sticker said 3210, and I just checked on a site that gives specs, and it said with all fluids and in running condition that the weight is 3210. and my small car lift at the house is rated for 2500 lbs. but It's lifted about a 2800 pound boat befor, and it had a extremly hard time getting my 93fd off the ground. wierd!!
"Gross" vehicle weight? You know, it almost sounds like taxes. Your "net" weight (i.e. what the car actually weighs with you and your standard cargo) is a good fraction of the "gross" weight (max vehicle capacity as the designers intended). But in our case, lighter is better. Wish it worked the same way with $$$.

gross (GVWR... the sticker weight) = curb weight + fluids + 2 passengers + cargo
if: curb weight + fluids + 2 passengers + cargo is greater than 3210, then you need to lighten the load. At least, according to Mazda. :P

GVWR - Curb = Cargo
(3210)-(2910)=(300)

the GVWR of the chassis will be the same. unless different shocks or springs change the GVWR.
my 95 PEP says 3210, so I am assuming Mazda is going by the chassis, and the different available suspension setups did not alter the GVWR.

2800 pounds is a pretty fair weight for most FD's - add in a little more if the car is an automatic and/or has a sunroof.
My car with me in it and a full tank of gas weighed in at 3010 at the Cat Certified Truck Scales
. That was some time back, mods were just downpipe/catback, and I'm about 190-200 pounds.
If you're curious, just go weigh the damn car. If nothing else, find a truck stop with Cat scales - it's a few bucks, but they're certified and accurate, and usually easier to find and get to than scales at the dump and the like. Heck, I've had friends use the scales at the weigh station coming into Florida on I-10
. Go there at night when it's slow, and the bored attendant will gladly weigh your nifty sports car.

The only difference in weight is going to be due to the emissions equipment... that the JDM FD's don't have.
