smoke under boost, any other causes?

Hey guys,

I'm noticing smoke under boost lately. It's enough to where I can see it through my rear view mirror in 1st and 2nd gear. Window is tinted, so I can't tell you the exact color yet. I'll have someone follow me to get more info. Small amount of grey smoke on startup (2 to 3 seconds). There is none at idle or normal driving.

Engine is 7k miles old, as well as the turbos. I had the BNR stage 3, but even with the new banjo bolt, smoked like hell at idle. So I switched to the stage 2's to not complicate things. They're 7k miles old as well. I'm running full exhaust with all emissions removed.

I've noticed about 1 qt oil consumption for every 1k miles since this last rebuild. There is no oil in either side of the IC piping or in the elbow. I have noticed an oil leak somewhere on the pass. side though, but haven't been able to pinpoint it. Are there any other causes for this other than the seals on the turbos going? They're running non sequential.

My Y pipe may have a small leak in it. Anything over 5 or 6 psi of boost and instead of the sssssssshhhhhhhhhhh normal turbo sound, it changes to a higher pitch and volume to a whhhhheeeeeeeeee type sound. I went to the dyno a few weeks ago, and during 1 of the 5 or 6 runs I made, right when I let off the gas a fairly large puff of smoke came from the turbo side of the engine. Kinda greyish color. Had no clue what it was, and there wasn't any oil spray in the engine bay.

Sorry for the length, just trying to determine if there would be any other cause than the turbos going bad, yet again. If so, I better hurry and get myself a daily driver!

Thanks for any input!

Cavell

Yeah, should be a year warranty. They're about 5 months old or so.

Just will have to be a pain to buy another car so I can take these off and send them in.

Another question, is there any real trick to get the 2 pieces of the Y pipe to connect tighter and more securely? Maybe replace the rubber o-ring in between the two?

Check the hose to your boost sensor.

I found that it's grey smoke under boost. And a puff of black when backfiring, but I'm guessing black is fuel smoke.

contrary to what everyone likes to say here, I have stock rebuilt BNRs with less than 1k on them. The primary on the rebuild was not successful and I am in the same situation as you sorta. I have another car to drive, but I'm not paying for them to be removed and reinstalled and I don't have the means to do them myself.

Completely stock. Although I did just buy a new PCV valve. The one going to the intake manifold. Haven't put it on yet.

I hear you AMRAAM. I'll be disappointed and a little annoyed if I have to be without my car for yet another long period of time.
