SMOKE! no... not there
I had smoke from my dash! Heres the story, I went to go see a movie with my girlfriend yesterday after the car had been in the garage the entire weekend. I noticed that the gauges were not illuminated nor were the parking lights or glove box light. Checked the fuses when I got home and sure enough, I had to replace the fuse. Then, when I had the parking lights on and the ignition in the on position I started to smell something like burning plastic Then my g-friend and I saw smoke coming from above my a/c dial. imediatel turned EVERYTHING off and diconnected neg. terminal on the battery. I took my newly put in blaupunkt cd head unit out and looked in the back for the problem. the cd unit was normally warm and then I touched the illumintation dial for the gauge lights, that sucker was so hot I couldnt even touch it, and its plastic. I waited 10 minutes before I pulled it out. Replaced the fuse again and all works well. Has anybody had this problem. my car only has 73k miles on it, so i dont believe its old age. What should I do?

damn, thats some scray ****... i'm impressed at your quick thinking, i bet most people wouldnt think to disconnect the battery asap when something like that happened - hope it stays well for you, maybe you (like everyone else) should invest in a fire extinguisher just in case, ya know?

Hey Taylor,
Sorry to hear about your problem. Your message seems to indicate you already thought of it, but someone probably yanked a little too hard on one of the wiring harnesses leading to the stereo when it was installed.
Try rewrapping the wiring bundles behind the dash with electrical tape in case one of them was cut by any sharp sheet metal around the radio or behind the A/C controls, and then gently reinstall the stereo. It might be hard to find the cut wire otherwise.
