Unhappy the smell burns!!!!

I just installed a used racing beat cat back and now the exhuast stinks real bad. it kinda burns the eyes a little. my old stock muffller had a few bullet sized holes in it so i replaced it. I've a down pipe sitting in my apartment waiting to be installed. could this smell be caused from bad cats? I have plans to get a highflow cat and 3" from the dp to the racing beat. My car didn't smell like this before the new muffler. any ideas?

Sounds like you have an exhaust leak. Sometimes, you might need and extra gasket to get the exhaust flanges to mate up (i.e. 2 gaskets between the stock cat and catback flanges).

did you retighten after a cool down?

After installing my RB DT (new), my exhaust does smell little worst than stock during warm up but not to point of eye watering.

As Mahjik says, it sounds like an exhaust leak. With a bad cat you usually get a rotten egg smell. If you start getting headaches, don't fool around with it. It means you're getting carbon monoxide poisoning. Put the car up on a lift. Feel above and around the full length of the exhaust system. You should be able to feel where the leak is. Sometimes briefly plugging the tailpipe opening with a rag can help you spot where the leak is.

I was figuring on doing a dp and highflow cat anyways. the stock exhuast system did seem a little "full" on black stuff. I'm going to get inspected this month, my brother has a dp and high flow and the same mufler so depending on how he does i might just go a head and do the switch before i get inspected. thanks for the feed back. maybe the stock cat jsut needs to breath a little better for a while.

Could be solvents from the manufacturing process or some other contaminant burning when it gets hot. Is it brand new?

i bought it used from a member on this site. it looks ok as far as a used muffler goes, the smell seems to be getting a little better. i'll retighten the bolts in the next day or so and see if that helps any. when i put my downpipe on and get a new cat put on with a 3" pipe, that won't cause a boost spike will it? i've been searching the archive and it seems as long as i have a cat i should be cool. i'll put a bottle of injector cleaner threw the system next time i fill up maybe that'll help break up any loose stuff in the exhaust system. as far as solvents i sprayed simple green on the flanges to clean them before attaching them to the car. thanks for the help guys.
