slipping clutch?

I just bought this 95 RX7 5 speed. I just want to make sure this is a slipping clutch and there is nothing I should check first... The time when I notice it the most is cruising on the highway in 5 gear. If I floor it it revs very hard then the rpms come back down again, then it starts to pull. I can smell burnt clutch at this point. The lower gears slip a bit but not quite as bad. I really haven't pushed it too hard to give more details than that so I hope it is enough.

I'm going to start searching for a new clutch so if there is any advice or vendors I should look into please let me know. thanks!

Sounds like a slipping clutch. The higher gears are where it starts first. I would recommend the ACT Street/Strip clutch:

OEM feel with the ability to handle more power.

I don't really want to be cheap, but having just bought the car is there anything a little cheaper that would work? I haven't been able to examine the underside of the car too closely, so is this a pretty easy install or is it cramped and difficult?

Hate to say it, but if those prices are scaring you; then you better go ahead and sell this car. It's not going to get any better.

Here's a good thread on clutch changes and what to expect:

You might find a decent deal on a low-mileage clutch in the FS section, but IMO being cheap is a dangerous thing to do with clutches.

A clutch job on this car involves removing the transmission. It's a pull clutch, so disassembly is slightly different than most tranny/clutch jobs. Have you ever done a clutch job or similar task before? I would recommend that a DIY beginner stay away from it unless you have access to really proper tools (transmission jack for example) and someone more experienced to help if needed.

Price isn't bad, but if that is an upgrade kit, there should be a cheaper stock replacement. After buying the car, funds are a bit low.

If your car is close to stock and your not planning any major power upgrades, the OEM clutch is more than adequate. I'd call Ray Crowe at 888 533 3400 ask for the club price.

Yes, an OEM clutch from Malloy will be a little bit cheaper than the ACT. Be sure to change everything -- disc, pressure plate, and pilot bearing. Also be sure to replace the rear main seal while you are in there.

Didn't you notice this during the test drive of the car?

Oh, and nice to see another 95 owner.....

You can find OEM kits on ebay for $300 or so. However, saving $200 in this way would be a very bad choice if you ever plan to modify the vehicle. The stock clutch is only good to 300 rwhp or so, whereas the ACT Street/Strip can handle significantly more power.

Thanks everyone.
I did notice the clutch slipping on the test drive. But it was still by far the nicest car I drove. I'll get some pics up as soon as I get some time/a nice day.
It has a pettit racing streetported engine with 3mm apex seals (approx 2k miles).. It pushes a little more boost than stock 14-10-14 if I remember right. The work was done by MZM International in Austin, TX.
This combo will only be in the car for about a year, so I only need the clutch to last that long. It will all be replaced next year, but I want to be able to enjoy for that year.
I will call Ray Crowe and find out what that price will be. Thanks again everyone!

I found this on the car...Also found out the only thing that is still stock is the flywheel. Is it possible the slipping is being caused by the flywheel only??
Pettit streetported Engine, NippenDenso High Volume Fuel Pump, Pettit Raching Rechip with 14.7 limit, Exedy Clutch, Y-Pipe, Downpipe, Greddy SP Cat-back, Short shift kit, Boost and Oil Pressure guages, Front strut brace, Dual Oil Coolers, Turbo Timer, Apexi Power Intake, AST Removed, CWR Oil Coolers, Brembo Slotted/drilled Rotors, Hawk HP+ Pads, Smog pump removed, Eibach Pro Kit, Floudyne Racing Radiator

It's possible the stock disk is in good condition, but the pressure plate isn't strong enough. This happened to me.

You will need to upgrade to the ACT S/S clutch. Honestly, if you are worried about spending a couple of hundred dollars, you should just sell the car now.

i'll just stick my $0.02 in here, i bought an ebay exedy HD street clutch which to my knowledge is a OEM disk with a little heavier pressure plate for $250 shipped. So far so good, my car makes about 350 rwhp and so far no slipping.

Thanks for all the advice. It is greatly appreciated.
What's with all the sell it now comments? I'm new to manual trans and this engine type so I think shopping around and asking questions here is the best route. It isn't about the money, it is about the full plan I have for this car. Like I said this engine and trans will be replaced in a year.

I'm guessing you're going to "molest" a rare '95 by dropping a V8 in it?

I'm having second thoughts. I have to admit the rotary is a lot of fun.
