slipping in 4th n 5th only

Is it possible or common to have slipping in 4th and 5th gear only? I can't think of any reason a clutch would only slip in higher gears, so now I'm wondering if I've stripped 4th n 5th out of the trans.

Made 476hp 358 tq when it was dynoed a couple years ago. And it's running a exedy twin disk which is supposed to be rated for 500ft lbs . What do you think is happening?

The 5th gear synchro has a tendancy to wear out on these cars causing it to slip out of 5th. Try a search on the subject.

Higher gear, higher load, more likely to show a worn clutch.

^^ Yes, higher gears is when clutches start slipping when they are worn out, too weak for the application or mis-adjusted.

Gears cannot slip without removing teeth or breaking the transmission case so they only slip once for an instant.

I think the front friction disc and/or pressure disk of the twin disk clutch is now past its wear limit and needs to be replaced.

But before you replace the clutch parts, make sure the clutch slave cylinder is fully disengaging.

You would know if your gears were slipping. It sounds like marbles in a cement mixer, followed by a tow truck taking you home.

High gears=higher load, as BLUE_TII said.

There is more load in the higher gears so a failing clutch will show up there. Disks are probably worn out. They offer replacements. Hit me up if you need some.

Clutch disks wear out with use, regardless of the rated torque capacity, the replacement disks are available.

Another sign of worn disks on the Exedy twin, is very snappy engagement in 1st gear.

As everyone has already mentioned, a dying clutch slips in the taller gears first. Its 4th and 5th today, 3rd tomorrow.

Totally agree with the others. The clutch in my Mazdaspeed 3 had the same behaviour. It first started slipping in 6th and 5th gear, later in 4th and even later in 3rd. Then a new clutch came in ;-).

Ok so I'm gonna assume it's the clutch then . That really sucks. It only has maybe 3k miles on it, probably less, and it was 1700$

I chose the exedy twin based off of very positive reviews from everyone here. Has anyone else had theirs fail/wear so soon? Is there a better choice?

No, my Exedy twin lasted much longer so far, but it is on ~300rwhp.

Did you by chance accidentally get the carbon disks? Those disks can wear out that fast if not always used hot (as in racing).

Well, got to drive it over the weekend, and this time it didn't slip?? It had slipped the last 3 times I drove it. Maybe it's at the very beginning of failing and only doing it sometimes?

^This as you might have oil film on the flywheel from a possible rear oil seal leak.
