Slight problem with transmission

This problem has been occurring for a long time now and has not gotten worse but since I intend to change the clutch sometime in the near future I figure it might be a good time to fix this annoyance. Here are the details:

Whenever I shift into second gear from first, there is a slight grinding that can be felt through the shift ****. If I hold the clutch pedal down and wait a moment or two before shifting into second, then it doesnt grind. Under normal driving I usually try to do this but its getting annoying.

Anyone have any idea what the problem is and what I can do to fix it?

thanks
CBB

Could be a number of things.....could be a synchro, or maybe your PPF, really anything. Could you kind of clarify a little bit more? Does this only happen in 2nd gear?

Yes, it only happens going into second gear from first. There isnt much more to describe. Thats basically all that happens.

I'm putting up a vote for a cracked synchro! But it could be something else so I'll wait for someone else to post their opinion.

I have that same problem when shifting into 5th. I'm pretty sure mine is a bad syncro.

My 95 PEP has the same problem, but changing to synthetic lubricant helped a lot. I used NEO's 75w90HD in the transmission and differential.

My '95 PEG does the same thing with only 40K original miles. I think I'm going to try synthetic but would appreciate more input.

Have you guys checked to make sure you have the proper level of fluid in there? It could just be that it leaked out... Maybe 2nd wears a little faster so it's more sensitive to low fluid... just an idea.

If it's not that, I'd go with worn synchro vote. This will not be a simple job to do when the clutch is out unless you've got some good long puller arms and stuff like that.

thanks for your replies. I have no idea how to deal with a worn synchro, but if that's what it is, then I guess Ill find out soon. I dont suppose anyone knows anything about the six-speed gearboxes in japan. If there is one for a decent price, maybe ill just get one of those instead of dealing with this one.

Probably the synchro and like someone said earlier, changing to Redline MT-90 really helped smooth it out.
