what do you mean leave it off? if your working on your car just shove some rags in there to stop any crap getting in.

pod filters should come with adapters, the hoses for the BOV, CRV and airpump connect to these.

It won't hurt anything IF nothing big or anything abrasive gets sucked in.

However, abrasive stuff will definitely get sucked in as you drive, so I don't recommend it.

If you are working on the car I would still wrap a clean rag or a shirt around it ,and in some way secured so it wont get sucked in. We have seen it happen, and it is not good. Your not going to be getting alot of pull if your just starting the car while working on it so just secure it with a zip tie or something like that for safety.

Don't ever use a T shirt for an air filter.

You might want to clarify your question as we don't understand

You better not be talking about driving without any sort of filter :\ Doesn't have to suck in anything large - just dust will tear an engine apart after a while. And if you don't know what to do...don't attempt to do anything. Read, search, and learn before you really screw something up.

Worth noting - at the 2.75" coupler of the tb elbow, idle vac can create 40lb of suction force. If you temporarily cover an inlet with something that isn't sufficiently restrained, or doesn't flow enough, it will get sucked in fast. It's a lot easier to let something get sucked in than you might think.

Is that due to the small area of the tube combined with the momentum of the moving engine parts creating that strong of a vacuum?

40lb is a maximum, since in reality that is measured at the UIM, and the throttle plates cause some pressure drop.

If you're ever bored, start the car with the coupler between the tb elbow and intercooler removed. Then use a sturdy flat plate to block the flow. It pulls hard.

Yeah, 40 sounds about right to me. I had my IC off the other day, and I started the car and put my hand over the intake pipe. It sucked much harded than I thought it would. Heh, it left a big red circle on my palm.

After that, I went straight to my air filter and gave it a good cleaning.
