Should I elmininate the mid pipe?

Mods are in my sig, and I'm taking the car in for a reman after I pay my taxes here shortly. I'm not looking for big horsepower, just a as much reliability as possible. I would be plenty happy if the car made 300rwhp, but not heartbroke if it falls short.

They are saying it would be in the motors best interest to port the waste gate considering my mods, but I just wonder if eliminating that mid pipe and going with a high flow cat would be in my best interests conisdering my goals for the car are minimal. I don't race the car or plan to, so making it this 500hp monster for street use would just be a waste.

Not to mention the smell is pretty undesirable, and I'm edgy because boost creep killed my last motor.

I realize I will see some power loss and the exhaust will quiet down, but how much power loss? I have a greddy sp catback, but with a highflow cat am I going to see a huge difference in sound, or just minimal?

If I did go with a highflow cat, would porting the wastegate even be something to still consider, or am I still going to need to address this even with a highflow cat?

Oh, and i could care less if the car shoots flames

I have a Gotham Racing High-Flow cat and the Greddy SP2 cat-back exhaust, and I loved it when I had my stock twins. My Greddy Profec B Spec2 kept my boost right where I wanted it and I never saw it creep more than 1-2 lbs over. Personally, since you said you weren't trying to make a horsepower monster; I'd highly recommend a high-flow cat. To me, that combo just had one of the best exhaust notes I've heard out of a Rotary. It also will pass the visual emission inspection if that is a factor in your state. The boost in horsepower over a factory cat isn't amazing, but every little bit helps. Hope that helps some.

I think you're on the right track. I love my high-flow cat - if you get a good one, it will flow almost as well as a midpipe.

I have very controllable boost as well without a ported wastegate. But, every setup is different - it's hard to say, what will be stable for one person won't be for another.

Sounds like a high flow cat is the way to go for you. My dad made 290 rwhp with his main cat still installed, at only 12 psi. It wouldnt hurt to have the wastegate ported while the engine is out, provided whoever performs the work knows what they're doing and doesnt damage your turbos.

On the dyno with a Bonez high flow cat the car made 311, with the midpipe it was 321, both runs were close to the same boost and AFRs.

I'd stick with the high flow cat, emissions friendly and less stink.

i had my stock cat gutted and i would creep boost everywhere i went, so i bought a rx7store 3" hi flo cat and set my turbo xs manual boost controller at 12 pounds and it would never creep past that, i would sometimes spike 14 but harly and it wasnt for long. I also have a greddy intake 3" dp and catback. Also with the hi flo cat it doesnt smell too bad.

So with my mods and a good tune running 12psi on my 99 turbos, it's probably safe to say that 300rwhp won't really be that hard to obtain, or very damn close. That's great for me then. I wouldn't care it is was stock turbos at stock HP levels...fast enough to put a smile on my face.

They can handle the porting job, so I'm not worried about that so I'll have them do that as well.

I think I will upgrade the ic, nothing fancy, considering the xspower smic as it seems to be favored around here for what it is worth. Is the stock fuel pump/fuel system something I should address while they are in there, or is it fine for what I am running? I have most everything else upgraded as far as hoses and whatnot go, and just trying to make the final decisions from searching hundreds of threads and my limited knowledge and I don't want to miss the obvious and regret it 40k miles later.

I know I know, damn newbs

I like my Bonez. And with your Greddy SP, I think both you and your neightbors will like the change in sound.

If you keep your levels to 12 psi/300 rwhp then the stock fuel system will be enough. My dad's been running a stock fuel system for about 5 years now at that hp level.

I know how you feel about 'fast enough'......my 500R at 15 psi feels like well over 400 rwhp, I am pretty positive I'm making over 500 crank hp in a car that weighs about 2650. Not sure if I'll need to crank the boost unless for special occasions

Don't mean to break your heart, but I don't think you will be racing any X-43A's in the near future

Man thanks guys, I had my doubts on keeping it considering what I want out of the car, but wasn't sure if it was worth replacing with a high flow cat or not with my modest goals.

Man, this is getting so close to going down I can already hear the motor purring.
