Should he drive it full time?
My 17 year old son just bought his grandmother's 93 RX7 for $3500. It has 104K miles on it; however, she replaced the engine a few thousand ago. My son also has a 93 Volvo station wagon that we bought him when he turned 16 that he plans to drive most of the time.
His plan with the RX7 is to drive it very little & as he earns money, make some modifications.
My questions are:
*Is what he's doing practical?
*Will not driving it make a difference in the value of the car down the road since it has such high mileage anyway?
*Would he be better off to sell the Volvo, put that money toward the RX7 (plus what we're putting toward maintaining it & insurance) & drive the RX7 as his full time car?
The RX7 is in excellent condition & loaded, truly driven by a little old lady.
Thank you!

Keep the Volvo as a daily driver. If he plans to hold on to it for resale value, sell it now. You'll get more for it now since it was bought for such a low price, than it will ever be for a long time, possibly ever.
Personally, I'd never let any 17 year old drive that car.

miles driven on that car wont change the resale value that much, since it did reach the 100k mile mark already. also, keep in mind that when modifying this vehicle, you are probably not even going to get half of what you put into it, not to mention the car will be faster...something you wouldnt want for a 17 year old. even people with more driving experience can get addicted to the speed of this car and want to maneuver this machine dangerously, just like my brother. he flipped over after going too fast on a highway ramp and slipping on a little bit of gravel.
so my advise? let him drive as little as possible and have him work for what he wants, he'll appreciate it more.

Who is his grandmother? What's her story? How did she aquire the car?
Please Reply!^
If you love your son go with him every time he drives the car...... In the hands of an inexperienced driver it could be Dangerous!

As has been stated, he definitely should keep the volvo. If there is any chance of rain, keep the rx7 parked.
also, take him to a huge empty parking lot on a sunday, and show him how easily a rwd turbo car can swap ends.
Lucky kid, but i will say this----the FDs can be 'widow-makers' if not driven with proper respect.

Great input! Thank you everyone. To answer your questions ...
His grandmother is now 84 years old & bought it in 95. She drove it 60 miles every day, until about four years ago, commuting to her part time night job as a psyche nurse. She is now retired & sporting around in a new Volvo station wagon. The station wagon is for her three yellow Labs. She is a hoot!
I drive a 93 Miata which I drive two miles a day commuting to work. Love it & plan to keep it a long time.
The driving lessons are a super idea. Can anyone recommend someone in central Florida?

I'm going to have to go with what everyone else is telling you. Even if your kid is responsible with the car, there is a good chance that he won't have the driving experience to be completely safe in a car like this. Learning to handle a RWD sports car can be an interesting experience--throw in turbos and it can get nasty.
I really reccomend you go to some autocrosses with him in your area. This way he can learn to handle the car at the limits. You can't keep him from taking stupid chances on the street, but you can at least make sure that he knows how to handle his car better than he can now.
Good luck with everything,
Steve

they are all going to tell you to not even let him drive it till he has some seat time at autocross or something... Its his car let him do what he wants with it. fact of the matter is there are other cars that are much more dangerous to drive then the FD. MR2 for example i would have to say everyone has a much higher chance of beefing it in a mr2 then they do in a FD, if you know anything about MK1 and MK2 mr2s you will know why i say this. If you dotn then dont say ****.
FD guys/ MR2 guys/ and Type R guys are all super **** when it comes to who they think should buy/own/drive these cars. I say if he wants to drive it just make sure he knows what he is getting into then let him drive it.

That is awesome that someone has a grandmother cool enough to buy an RX-7 (and a mom to allow it). It's fortunate that the car is an automatic because the car will be slightly easier to drive in less than ideal conditions. But the car is still difficult to drive in the rain. Keep the Volvo as a daily driver and keep the RX7 as stock as you can.
Ditto on the autocross. I went from a front wheel drive car to a rear wheel drive car when I bought mine. It really helped keep me out of trouble when I drove the car on the streets.
