^^^ That can happen in a civic!! I think that you are pointing more to the lack of skill than the age and car yes?

http://www.panozracingschool.com/Locations_Sebring.asp

Search thru the panoz site and see which one you and your son want to go do You and he will get a great father son bond and have a hell of a time. Plus you can get an idea of where he stands in regards to common sense and skill level with the car.

Tell him that he needs to earn a specific licsense from the school or something similar so he understands that this car and ALL cars in general are weapons. And need to be treated with respect and common sense.

There are many other schools out there if that is too much $$ or bad timing etc.. Check some of your local SCCA events and sites for more info and local track events/driving schools.

Good luck with the car and your sons addiction!! It is a very $$ habbit!! But very fun and rewarding as well.

since you have a new motor in the car, i dont see how daily driving would be a big issue for the next year or 2.

It is cool that your kid worked that hard for it. I did too when I was a kid and as a result respect and take care of my cars a lot better than others who had their parents give them a BMW or something when the turned 18.

There are some good high performance driving schools in Florida. I think one of them is Skip Barber. Its a bit pricey at $1000-1500 but its worth it if it saves you just one accident.

I'm 19 and I feel that I am responsible enough for my car -- I also know that I can act like a retard and shouldnt be behind the wheel of it at times.

We dont know your son, but you do -- personally if I were the parent I'd say let him drive the Volvo for another year or so for the sake of learning all his experiances in something safe and not of GREAT value. Also, I'm GLAD I didnt have my RX-7 in high school as everyone else is TERRIBLE at driving, even if you are good and this typically equals damage. I can not tell you how many cars were just backed into or dings or completely wrecked because us kids can be impatiant, rude or just plain jerks.

That's awesome that he has the oppertunity to own an FD but in HS I'd say its a bad thing, atleast for driving to school -- maybe as a weekend car (responsibility IS key) since that would lower the risk greatly. Also take head to the weather, the turbos in this car are fast to spool and the rears hop out easy, I never really thought so the first few rainstorms but if I didnt already know how to handle situations like that from my previous car I'd of said good bye all too soon to my pretty little car.

The auto's are actually little harder in my opnion to drive. When going around corners and giving it gas, it downshifted a few times on me putting me in instant boost. Not a good thing. I hard to learn the fine line of how much gas I could give it without it kicking down a gear. And this was just easy daily driving. No speeding involved.

id keep the volvo and teach him, or have someone teach him, how to properly handle the car. the FD is dangerous/deadly in inexpierienced and immature hands (and even still the power of the car can be tempting in mature and immature hands alike). im in the process of searching for a daily driver myself. i bought an excellent condition FD and already spent more than 1k in maintainence and repair. its an expensive car, and it demands respect and skill.
if i were you id make him earn it first...

I'm 20, have powerful FD, and i am reckless, dangerous, hot headed and arrogant. I smoke too many cigarettes, go to sleep to late, do poorly in college, and work on FD too much. I forgot where this was going. oh right right, 17 is kind of young for FD driver. I have no kids so i cant say what to do. Good luck.

I don't know about you guys but this "story" doesn't sound so real. First, the mom/dad is posting for their son on a forum for RX-7's instead of himself. Second, the grandmother driving it still with a replaced engine....do you know of any grandma's driving those rockets around town? $3500 for a 3rd gen that seems to pretty low in miles and in good condition. I don't know....doesn't soudn so real. Are you sure you're not the actual son pictured in front of the car acting like the parent?

If I've offended older people who really do post things for their children on forums then I'm sorry but I've not seen that ever in my life....

This story just sounds fishy to me...

My grandmother drove a 911 till she was about 83, of course she drove it maybe 10 miles a week, but it was her only car :\

im in a similar situation i guess, im 17, just got an fd. my dad is paying for half of it, so im pretty spoiled i guess. But ive been driving a turbo 2 1990 rx7 since this spring, and i am aware of how a rwd car handles. I did a little drifting, but not much becaues i was always worried about wrecking. with my fd *which im not going to drive until spring, because of salt and snow and that nasty stuff* i plan on being responsible. I know my abilities and i have self control. I do go fast, but not faster than the road. I RARELY ever go 'fast' on roads i dont know. for a 17 yo, i feel like im pretty responsible. im a senior in hs taking 4 AP classes and am govt *maintaining a pretty decent gpa* and i work about 30 hours a week. i dont know what my point is on this post...i guess to just say that if the kid is responsible, he will be fine. but i guess i did have a little previous experience with turboed cars so...

but hey! best of luck! ive only driven my new fd like 15 miles, and i love it! *dad wont let me drive it b/c no insurance, yet*

It entirely depends on how you raised your kid. If he's responsible and respects the car, he'll do fine. If he's not, odds are something is going to happen to that FD in some shape or form. Simple as that...

Keep the volvo as the daily driver. The FD has way too many miles even with the new engine, you need to fix those problems....not just the new engine.

Good luck!!

That kid's going to get some tang! Sorry Dad, but it's true.

I think an important thing to mention is the special maintenance requirements for this car. Make sure you read, read, and read some more about how to tune this car. These engines are very tempermental. Make sure you are educated before doing anything to that car. Plus, make sure your son knows how to maintain the car and not beat the **** out of it.

Where in Central Florida are you? Keep the Volvo and bring the RX-7 to the November 20th meet in Jacksonville.

Chillin & Rice - If my son had written the initial entry the sentences would have been monosyllabic & without capitals or punctuation. Besides, what would be his motive? He's the one who doesn't want to drive it all the time. I think it's a waste of money to maintain two vehicles for one driver; but, I admit I know nothing about collecting cars.

Rey - Thanks for the info. I will definitely encourage him to get involved in events like that. Nov 20 is the FL/FL State game ...

Not all young people write in monosyllabic or poor grammar. Also, the motive might be so he wouldn't get ripped a new one for asking those questions 'cause he's young....that's all. Just fishy to me.

If you are his parent, then I applaud you for asking the questions on this forum for advice. If not and you are pretending to be a parent but in actuality are the kid, then you are afraid.

if you are ready to enter world of FD, the time will come, and it will feel right. The voice of the street called to me, I could feel the intense burning power of 13B. Now I realize my dream of hot rodding.
