Shifter bushings?

Greetings,

I have a new B&M short shifter, and I want to get a new bushing in hand before installing it. I understand that the original bushing is nylon, and is probably cracked. I also know there are aluminum bushings made, and have seen one at Mazdacomp.

My question is, should I get the aluminum, or just stick with stock nylon? If the answer is stock nylon, can anyone find a part number for this? I can't find it on the parts list at Mazdaformance, though I haven't called them to ask. My local dealer ordered one for me, but when I opened the part, there was a spring inside. I'm never dealing with them again for parts. Grrrr.

Thanks,

Pettit Racing sells a "shifter renew kit" # SH-PK-SR but if the B&M is a one piece sealed unit, wouldn't it replace that?

Although I know you're sick of our dealer here, they usually have them in stock. Ask for one from the miata. It is a little white cup looking thingy. I don't know the part number, but they're pretty common.

I have the metal one...I got mine from Mazdatrix... I know it will never break like the nylon ones but as far
as shifting...It feels a little more precise...however it might contribute to a little more noise from the tranny.

Thanks for the replies. I tried looking up the part on the Miata parts list, but couldn't find it there either, and yes, I'm sick enough of the dealership to wait until I get the parts via mail.

I had checked the Mazdatrix site before, but didn't see the bushing. Knowing now that Mazdatrix carries it, I looked a little more closely, and found it this time. I ordered a nylon and an aluminum bushing, so so I should have all the bases covered. I think I'll try the aluminum one first, and if I don't like it, at least I have the nylon to fall back on.

Thanks again,

Here's the info from Mazdatrix.

17-462A-0398 Nylon BUSHING $4.68
02-9401-0000 Aluminum BUSHING $14.63

FWIW, the short shifter is in, with the aluminum bushing. It took a lot of force to get the aluminum bushing to "snap" in place, and it certainly causes more noise to be transmitted from the trans. The shifter also rattles, which I've read about. I might very well put the plastic bushing on if the noise continues to bug me.

Cheers,

I just read some more info on the rattling, and it sounds like the aluminum bushing is not the cause. It's just something to do with the short shifter in the FD. Mazdatrix had some info on that. They mentioned something about filling the reservoir to a certain point would help reduce this.

When the car is level, how high should the fluid be in the shifter reservoir? The book give a figure in cc's, but that doesn't help much. I took out the old fluid that was in mine, and replaced it with Royal Purple, and I filled it to about the same level as before. This is about 1/4" below the top of the housing. Should I have put more in it?

Thanks,
